WWE Security Interferes As Cody Rhodes Fan Attacks Drew McIntyre
The Undisputed WWE Champion Drew McIntyre really is hated by fans, as a recent incident shows.
Drew McIntyre became a 4-time WWE World Champion on the January 9th edition of SmackDown in Berlin when he defeated Cody Rhodes.
It was a controversial title win since Drew got an assist from Jacob Fatu, who showed up at the 3 Stages of Hell finale, the Steel Cage Match, to prevent Drew from winning. Instead, Rhodes didn’t like Fatu getting involved, so they got into a fight, and Drew ended up exiting the door to leave with the WWE Title.
For McIntyre, it was his third time winning the classic WWE Championship, but it was the first time he won it with fans in attendance because the first two times he won it were during the COVID-19 era in 2020 with no fans at the shows.
As the top heel on the WWE SmackDown brand and across WWE as a whole, McIntyre is respected by many smart fans for his status as a 20+ year veteran. However, some fans also legitimately hate him and love Cody. McIntyre doesn’t shy away from being a jerk as a character because it’s part of the job, and he clearly loves it.
While speaking to TMZ’s Inside The Ring, Drew McIntyre revealed that during a recent fan meeting, a fan actually lunged at the champion, and security got involved.
“There was one incident actually at a show last week, somebody won a raffle to meet a superstar backstage, and they asked me to do it. I said ‘are you sure? Cody is on the show. He’s the big good guy, I’m kinda controversial in the middle guy’. They said no no, everyone wants to see you.
The guy came back and lunged at me and did say ‘that’s Cody’s title!’ That meant security had to get between us, and I calmed him down, we got a picture together, said we’ll get a picture with the title. He was really genuinely upset, it was great.
Because I knew he was so legitimately upset, as soon as we took the picture he started mouthing off again so I stepped back, moved the security guard between us, and raised the title, just went ‘hahaha’ like a child.”
Drew McIntyre Welcomes Emotionally Invested WWE Fans
As the Scottish Warrior explained, he’s fine with fans caring about the WWE product and showing an emotional investment like that.
“I want fans like that, as long as you’re passionate and making noise, there’s nothing worse than somebody just sitting there on their hands not making noise whatsoever.
Does (Green Shirt Guy) sit on his hands all the time? I’ll mess him up if he’s sitting there not making noise because I see him at all these appearances, we’ve taken about 6000 pictures together, so I’ll be telling him next time I see him.
But yeah, as long as you’re emotionally invested that’s all that matters. There might be people who got free tickets, they might not be sure about WWE, then they check out the show, see the spectacle, see the crowd investment, how into it they are, and find themselves getting lost in it.
And if they’re not, eventually Drew McIntyre takes off his kilt, and they get very excited.”
At the Royal Rumble on January 31st, Drew McIntyre will defend the WWE Championship against the winner of a Fatal 4-Way match at Saturday Night’s Main Event on January 24th. The wrestlers in that match are Sami Zayn, Randy Orton, Trick Williams, and Damian Priest.
