UPDATE: John Cena’s WWE Future
John Cena is returning to WWE programming sooner than you think!
The Cenation Leader ended his in-ring career on the December 13, 2025 edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event. He faced Gunther in the final match of his retirement tour, putting over The Ring General in a big way.
Just days before John Cena was done with in-ring competiton, news emerged that he signed a new five-year deal with WWE as its ambassador. Cena made his blockbuster return to the sports entertainment juggernaut at WrestleMania 42, serving as the host of The Show of Shows.
It looks like the 49-year-old icon’s next WWE appearance is just around the corner. Benchmark International Arena, the host of Backlash on May 9, recently advertised The Cenation Leader for the upcoming premium live event. Now, a big revelation on John Cena’s new contract with the Stamford-based promotion has surfaced.
Real reason why John Cena is returning at WWE Backlash 2026
On the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer stated that the 17-time world champion’s role at Backlash 2026 is unclear as of now.
He then added that John Cena’s current WWE deal calls for a “number of appearances,” which is why he is returning at the mega event in Tampa.
The situation there is that he’s on Backlash. I’m not sure what the role will be because he said he’s never gonna wrestle again. They signed him to a contract which called for a number of appearances, so this is one of those appearances. His deal called for these things.
I mean, to me it’s kinda weird because he just did WrestleMania and it was supposed to be something special. And here we are a couple of weeks after WrestleMania and he’s doing it again. So it feels like for a big guest like that coming back so quick and having him again, kinda seems like why would you do it?
But I think the mentality is that John Cena is important and getting him on TV is important. He’s signed for a number of dates, so that’s one of them. That’s it.
John Cena’s current WWE contract calls for a number of appearances, Backlash will be one of them:

It remains to be seen how Cena surprises fans on May 9. Could he unexpectedly set up a feud with another star? Only time will tell.
