Sami Zayn Reportedly Refused Major WWE Creative Plans
Sami Zayn fought with WWE creative over his character’s direction.
Sami Zayn won the United States Title by defeating Carmelo Hayes on SmackDown as a part of the US Title open challenge that Hayes had taken over from former champion Ilja Dragunov.
Sami Zayn won in questionable fashion, however, because of a botched interference from Trick Williams, the NXT star who was pushed to the main roster this year. Tick and Sami then feuded until WrestleMania 42 and had a match for Zayn’s title at the Showcase of the Immortals, which Williams eventually won.
Right from when Zayn won the belt, the fans began to boo him. Their relationship with him was changing.
The feud between Sami Zayn and Trick Williams continued with the inclusion of a Gingerbread man, that was a mascot that Williams used to mock Zayn.
Zayn reportedly fought with the Creative Team to avoid a straightforward full heel turn and decided to keep his character’s changing relationship with the audience nuanced.
Self-Made Pro Reports That Sami Zayn Refused a Direct Heel Turn
Speaking on a recent Self-Made Session, Self-Made Pro revealed that Zayn pushed back when WWE’s creative team planned a straightforward, traditional heel turn for him on SmackDown following the boos he was getting from fans.
Zayn instead wanted to tell a nuanced story in which his character shifted only a little and didn’t do a 180-degree pivot.
He didn’t really want to turn heel, and he argued to creative, like, ‘Hey, why don’t we tell a nuanced story here?’ Because he told them, ‘I don’t think I’m a bad guy. I feel like my relationship with the fans is evolving, but I’m not necessarily a bad guy.’
Zayn himself told the Toronto Sun recently that he wanted an outside-the-box type of character shift.
I’ll disagree with your statement—I fully turned heel. I think I’m trying to play this one a little different.
I had this idea for a slight character shift that would be a little outside the box and split the audience a little bit.
That storyline took a weird turn on SmackDown when Sami compared himself to Bob Dylan, “going electric,” complained about Trick Williams disrespecting him, and attacked the Gingerbread Man mascot by kicking it below the belt, beating it down, and tearing off one of its arms.
Zayn lost his rematch to Trick Williams at Backlash, where Williams successfully retained the title with his friend, rapper Lil Yachty, by his side.
