A staredown between Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes on WWE SmackDown has teased a possible WrestleMania rematch at some point down the road.
After Cody Rhodes won the 2023 Royal Rumble match, he made it clear that his goal was to “finish the story” in his WWE career by becoming the WWE Champion for the first time. Cody wanted to win the WWE Championship that his father Dusty Rhodes and his brother Dustin Rhodes (Goldust) never won.
At WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles, many fans thought that Cody Rhodes would be the guy to beat Roman Reigns to become the new Undisputed WWE Universal Champion. It felt like the right time and the right guy. Instead, Reigns cheated to win again thanks to Solo Sikoa attacking Cody, which led to Reigns hitting Spear to win.
Since that match at WrestleMania 39, Reigns and Rhodes have been kept apart for the most part. On the Raw after WrestleMania, Cody was attacked by Brock Lesnar. That led to a four-month feud with three Premium Live Event matches, which culminated in Cody beating Lesnar at SummerSlam.
In the WWE Draft in May, Reigns was drafted to Smackdown while Rhodes was drafted to Raw, so they didn’t cross paths with eachother. That all changed this week on Smackdown.
Cody Rhodes & Roman Reigns have epic staredown on WWE Smackdown
Last Saturday at WWE Fastlane, Cody Rhodes became a WWE Tag Team Champion with Jey Uso. That means that Cody & Jey can appear on Raw & Smackdown any time they want.
That led to Smackdown in Tulsa with Cody & Jey easily handling the team of Austin Theory and Grayson Waller. After the match, Cody & Jey were in the aisle when the music of Roman Reigns hit.
After a staredown between the tag teams, Reigns and Rhodes locked eyes as they went face to face. They didn’t say anything because nothing had to be said and the audience watching the show knew the story. Cody wants another shot. As the two men continued to stare, new Smackdown GM Nick Aldis and other WWE Officials arrived to prevent a fight from happening.
For now, there’s no official Reigns-Rhodes rematch announced, but based on that staredown on Smackdown, it’ll be interesting to see when it actually takes place.
