Original Plans For Triple H & Stephanie McMahon’s WWE Romance Angle Finally Revealed

Triple H and Stephanie McMahon’s Iconic WWE romance angle was not supposed to unfold the way it did.

In late 1999, Stephanie McMahon was involved in a romance angle with Test. The on-screen couple got engaged and were set to marry on WWE TV.

However, Triple H crashed the wedding and revealed that he had already tied the knot with The Billion Dollar Princess in Las Vegas after drugging her.

While Stephanie was initially shocked, she later turned on her father and ex-fiancé, aligning with The Game and ushering in the McMahon-Helmsley Era.

Ahead of this year’s WrestleMania, Triple H interviewed his wife, Stephanie McMahon, on her podcast, “What’s Your Story? With Steph McMahon.”

During their conversation, The Game and The Billion Dollar Princess recalled how the storyline came together.

I was in a sort of an angle with your dad at that point in time where I couldn’t, I don’t remember specifics of it even, like for some reason I lost the opportunity to compete for the title. The only one that could change it would be him. So, somehow, but that was like kinda of our story. We were trying to get to a match between he and I somehow.

And then I threw the idea about the wedding thing. Like, ‘What if I had…’ This is how crazy of a time that was. ‘Well, what if I had gone to the bachelorette party and mickied her drink and then I end up with her and, like, while she’s out, I take her through one of those Vegas wedding chapel things in order to get the wedding. And now, like, I have to fight you. If you win, I annul the wedding and she can go on and get married. And if I win, I get the shot back at the championship or whatever,’ which I had thrown at your dad at that point in time and he loved.

The current WWE Chief Content Officer noted that he and Stephanie were not supposed to remain an on-screen couple for long. Instead, they were originally planned to go their separate ways after getting Triple H back into the title picture.

But it was supposed to be like super just, it was supposed to be like a one-off. We do this thing, you go about your business, I go do the stuff with Vince, which opens up a door for me to get back in the title picture, and we just move on from there. And then it, you know, blew up into something else. [25:43]
