The movie filming schedule of John Cena may be a big factor in whether or not he is involved with WrestleMania 39.

Since WrestleMania 39 is taking place in a major city like Los Angeles, there is a lot of speculation that some of WWE’s biggest stars ever are going to be wrestling on the show. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson could potentially face Roman Reigns, which has been rumored for several years now while “Stone Cold” Steve Austin looked so great at WrestleMania 38 in the Night One main event that he may be willing to have another match.

Then there’s John Cena, who hasn’t wrestled in WWE since losing a Universal Title match to Roman Reigns at SummerSlam 2021. Cena only appeared on WWE television once in 2022 – on the June 27th episode of Raw which was a celebration of Cena’s 20-year run in WWE.

It was reported in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter by Dave Meltzer that “there is a question regarding Cena” appearing at WrestleMania. That’s because Cena will be in Australia throughout February and March filming the movie “Ricky Stanicky.” The film is a comedy that will also star Zac Efron.

During his WWE career, John Cena won the WWE/World Heavyweight Titles a combined 16 times in his career, which is a record for the company. Ric Flair is also recognized as a 16-time World Champion (Flair says the number should be 21) as well although only two of those were in WWE. Cena has the most that took place solely in WWE.

The popular choice as the guy that could face John Cena at WrestleMania is Austin Theory, who regained the US Title at Survivor Series. Theory grew up idolizing Cena, so it would be a case of one of WWE’s biggest stars of all-time (Cena) battling one of the company’s biggest rising stars in Theory.

WrestleMania 39 takes place on April 1 and 2, 2023 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. Whether or not Cena will be at WrestleMania, and in a wrestling role, remains to be seen.
