Cody Rhodes Left AEW Due To “Icky Situation”
Cody Rhodes has given another glimpse into the reasons behind his AEW exit.
Back in 2019, Cody Rhodes was heavily involved in changing the wrestling landscape forever after banding together with The Young Bucks, Kenny Omega, and Tony Khan to create AEW. During his tenure with the company, Rhodes played a huge role in signing talent and served as an Executive Vice President.
However, just three years later, the star was back with WWE and has gone on to establish himself as one of the biggest names in the entire industry. Although Cody Rhodes has claimed he “hated” the narrative about his time with AEW, he’s repeatedly refused to reveal why he decided to leave.
Despite this, he admitted he always knew he’d return to WWE.
Cody Rhodes Denies Issues With Tony Khan
During an appearance on The Flagrant, Rhodes dismissed a couple of popular theories about why he decided to leave the company he helped create. The American Nightmare said his exit had nothing to do with Tony Khan or his wife Brandi. Instead, he said the situation felt “icky,” but stopped short of giving any further details.
“There are so many factors that went into it. When I start talking about this, people try to cite, ‘Oh, it was this. It was this.’ Here’s what I can tell you it wasn’t. It wasn’t anything to do with Tony (Khan) and Brandi.
That’s a big one you hear all the time that ‘Tony didn’t sign Brandi.’ No, Brandi had been re-signed. Rhodes To The Top, we had a nice show on TBS, that had been renewed for a second season. Go Big Show.
It was just a situation that felt icky. This is how I look at it in the end, I had really great memories with all of them, all the way back to All In. I had a really beautiful experience for a while, and I wanted to keep the memories good. I wanted to be able, in ten years, if I see those guys, I wanted to keep them good.
I also wanted them to know, this is the Louisiana Purchase of wrestling, I will make sure, but I had great memories with them, and I wanted them to know.”
Cody Rhodes will be back in action at Crown Jewel where he’ll take on Gunther. The winner of that match will be declared the first-ever Crown Jewel Champion. On the same show, Liv Morgan and Nai Jax will battle for the women’s version of the same title.
Meanwhile, Roman Reigns will return to the ring teaming with The Usos to tackle The Bloodline.
