A championship wrestler in AEW is happy to be there instead of working for WWE.

The AEW Women’s World Championship is currently held by Thekla, an Austrian-born wrestler known for being one of the most distinctive characters in the women’s division.

Nicknamed “The Toxic Spider,” Thekla is a wrestler who can do it all in the ring, while also doing unique things like an upside-down spider walk to intimidate her opponents.

At AEW Double or Nothing, Thekla successfully defended the Women’s World Title in a 4-way match that also included Kris Statlander, Hikaru Shida, and Jamie Hayter – all of whom are former Women’s World Champions.

Even though Statlander and Shida have been a tag team in the past, they had issues in this match. Shida also hit Statlander in the back with a kendo stick when Statlander nearly had the match won. After Hayter and Shida hit a double clothesline on the floor, Thekla hit The Stomp on Statlander in the ring to get the pinfall win.

It was reported in March 2026 that Thekla signed a new long-term deal with AEW even though she had only debuted in the company less than a year earlier. That commitment by AEW showed that the company thought highly of Thekla and that the talented Austrian obviously enjoyed working there.

In an interview with The Sal Licata Show, Thekal explained why she signed that new deal with AEW.

“Honestly, a no-brainer. Like, I love TK. I love working with him, and I love his energy backstage, and all the girls are nice. The locker room is quiet and peaceful, and I love my job. It’s cute, you know?”

As she continued, Thekla spoke about her happiness in AEW, and she did so in a unique way.

“I don’t think the grass is greener anywhere else because I’m sitting in a f***** flower garden, you know?” (H/T Ringsidenews)

Thekla Had Her Reasons For Choosing AEW Over WWE

The decision to become All Elite instead of signing with WWE was an easy one for Thekla, which she explained to Chris Jericho in February 2026.

“I had always told my friends back when AEW first started, I was like, ‘Hey guys, just so you know, this is where I’m going to be at some point. So just heads up.’ So then my cocky attitude kind of led me also to be like, you gotta follow up on that one.

When I first started watching WWE and learning about how things are done over there. I think generally, I didn’t love the idea of having to not do things my way. Everybody knows that you gotta drop your name and have to do whatever somebody tells you. I’m not great with authority.

When AEW started, I thought, okay, something new. I love a good underdog. And I just liked the melting pot of people who started there. It just had more of a punk feel and more of a fresh feel. I was like, that’s probably a good place for me at some point.”
