In shocking news Saturday, WWE veteran Cody Rhodes — known as Stardust for the past two years — has apparently asked to be released from his contract. The two-time Intercontinental Champion announced his desire to leave WWE via his personal Twitter account.

He retweeted the comments on his @StardustWWE account too. Still no official word from WWE regarding Rhodes’ request to be let go from the company as of yet.

His wife Eden did take to Twitter Saturday to show support for her husband.

Analysis: There are a lot of moving parts here, and it’s obvious this was not a decision taken lightly by Cody Rhodes. With his brother still chugging along as Goldust and his wife, Eden — an announcer for WWE — both still involved in the business, it had to be a difficult decision for Cody Rhodes to make.

This is a bummer for me, knowing how much potential Rhodes had in WWE. His Dashing Cody Rhodes gimmick, followed up by the Undashing Cody Rhodes character, were both some of the most entertaining characters in the company at the time. The Stardust character was unique, but ultimately a death sentence to his career when they refused to pull the trigger and bring back Cody as himself. It was a go-nowhere filler character with zero main event potential — which is where, I think, many of us fans thought Rhodes would wind up one day.

With the extreme influx of supremely talented performers, many wrestlers will get the short end of the stick when it comes to opportunities and air time — Cody Rhodes was one of them.

How do you feel about Cody Rhodes potentially leaving? Do you think WWE dropped the ball? Let us know in the comments below. In the mean time, here are some dashing tips for nostalgia.
