The John Report: AEW Dynamite 03/31/21 Review
Welcome to the AEW Dynamite review here on TJRWrestling. AEW was against WWE NXT this week and they will be next week, but the week after that will see Dynamite unopposed from that point on. That should probably Dynamite get more fans watching this show on Wednesday nights. This show was taped last Thursday. I didn’t see any spoilers for it.

The AEW Dynamite intro video aired followed by JR saying: “It’s Wednesday night and you know what that means.” I always like that Brodie Lee reference. The announce team is Jim Ross, Tony Schiavone and Excalibur as usual. There were wrestlers and AEW staff surrounding the ring as usual.
Christian Cage made his entrance with his old TNA song. You can tell Tony was doing some voiceover comments since this is a taped show with Tony doing his enthusiastic announcing while the background noise was silent. Frankie Kazarian entered for this match between two guys in their 40s that know eachother well. This is Christian’s first singles match in about seven years.
Christian Cage vs. Frankie Kazarian
Christian with a side headlock to take control and then Kazarian hit him with an elbow to the jaw to knock Christian onto the ramp. Christian punched him back and Kazarian gave him a back body drop back into the ring. Kazarian with a hard whip into the corner. Christian tried to fight back by the turnbuckle, he was sitting on the top rope and Kazarian shoved Cage off the turnbuckle to the apron to the floor. Kazarian grounded Christian with a headlock leading into a twisting neckbreaker for two. Kazarian with a belly-to-back suplex. Kazarian with punches to the back along with a hard whip into the turnbuckle. Christian with a punch followed by a swinging DDT for a two count. Christian stood on Kazarian’s back by the ropes followed by a punch/slap to the face and Christian hit an uppercut off the ropes for two. They each got two counts with Frankie getting a jackknife cover and then Christian come back with a two count of his own. Christian countered a move into a reverse DDT. Christian missed a splash off the ropes when Kazarian moved and Frankie slapped on a Crossface Chickenwing submission with Cage getting his foot on the bottom rope to break the hold. Kazarian did some trash talking, Christian got an inside cradle and Frankie hit a clothesline. Kazarian hit a springboard leg drop that got a two count. They went up top and Frankie hit the Flux Capacitator that can also be called the Spanish Fly that’s like a flipping Rock Bottom and that only got a two count. Kazarian missed a springboard legdrop, Christian stretched the back against the ropes and Christian hit a Frog Splash for a two count. Kazarian went for the Chickenwing submission again, Christian got out of it and Christian sent him into the ring post. Christian hit the Killswitch (Unprettier) for the pinfall win after 16 minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Christian Cage
Analysis: ***1/2 This was really good and they were given a lot of time to tell a story. It’s impressive that Christian went this long in his first singles match in seven years. It shows how good of an athlete he truly is even at 47 years of age. Kazarian got plenty of offense, and nearly won a few times, but it was the right call for Christian to win to show that he is still at the top of his game. The announcers used the cliched “he’s good as ever” style lines throughout the match because that’s what announcers do when older wrestlers are in the ring. To Christian’s credit, he did look great. I’m happy for him.
Darby Allin and Sting were shown walking outside while wearing their outfits as if that’s normal. Allin talked about how Matt Hardy is trying to buy respect with Darby saying that you have to earn his respect because Matt’s money doesn’t mean “shit” to Darby.
Analysis: I guess Darby is cool because he’s allowed to say “shit” in video packages? Cool. I guess so.
The announcers did a rundown of what’s to come.

A video aired about Jade Cargill showing highlights while she did a promo. Jade talked trash about Red Velvet. Cargill mentioned Red “talking shit” and she called herself a bitch.
Analysis: It was fine. Back to back promos with “shit” usage.
QT Marshall was already in the ring. Cody Rhodes made his special entrance looking like a star. There were wrestlers around the ring. Apparently they are wrestlers trained by Cody and Marshall since they own a wrestling school in Georgia together.
Exhibition Match: Cody Rhodes (w/Dustin Rhodes & Billy Gunn) vs. QT Marshall
Arn Anderson is the referee in a referee shirt. The wrestlers shook hands. Cody with a shoulder tackle, then they did a routine you might see at wrestling school with some leapfrogs and then Cody hit an armdrag. Cody with a wristlock, but then he resisted kicking him in the face. They exchanged punches and Marshall hit a dropkick.

Cody was in control with a powerslam. Cody stopped himself from doing a Figure Four Leglock and then stopped himself from doing a Cross Roads neckbreaker, so Marshall slapped him. Marshall did a cross body block, Cody moved and Marshall landed on the floor. The crowd chanted “Cody’s Friend” which pissed off Marshall and he didn’t want Dustin to touch him. When Marshall went into the ring, he punched Arn in the face and left. The announcers freaked out.
Match Result: No Contest
Analysis: I won’t rate it since they called it an Exhibition Match. It was average and really just done to set up the obvious heel turn that everybody saw coming.
Marshall was on the stage acting as if he felt bad for what happened while Cody’s allies were in the ring with him. That led to some of Marshall’s students like Aaron Solow, Anthony Ogogo and Nick Comoroto beat up everybody with the help of a steel chair. Comoroto gave Lee Johnson a Powerbomb over the top rope and onto the stage. Marshall drove Arn Anderson’s arm into the barricade. Comoroto picked up a bloody Dustin Rhodes and Marshall got his guys to hand Dustin to him. Marshall gave Dustin a piledriver on the top of the steel steps. Ogogo the Olympic boxer punched Cody in the ribs and Cody sold it like the hardest body punch ever. Marshall was about to hit Cody with a steel chair, so Red Velvet ran out there and told Marshall to stop, so Marshall stopped himself. The heels left while Red Velvet asked for help, which was slow to arrive.
Analysis: The company that already has 37 stables now has another stable. It’s tough to get all of these groups TV time already, but now there’s another group. I’m not really sure that fans were clamoring for a QT Marshall heel turn and his own stable, but I guess the positive thing is that it will give TV time to some new people. The way the attack was done was okay. It’s only been a few weeks since Matt Hardy and MJF got their own separate heel stables. The idea of a group forming again loses its steam when you see it so often. Also, Cody Rhodes continues to be booked like one of the dumbest babyfaces in AEW because one of his friends turned on him. Poor guy.

Ethan Page and Scorpio Sky were in a video talking about how they are overlooked and they are not waiting or asking because they are going to take everything they want. Page said it starts on Monday when they team up on Dark Elevation.
Analysis: This is strange to me because Page just debuted in the last month and he’s already complaining about how he’s being used? They have only put him on Dynamite once, so I guess he’s justified, but why sign him and not use him more on Dynamite? And then there’s Sky, who was part of SCU, left the group to be on his own and now he’s teaming with another guy. I don’t know if this company has long-term booking the way they think they do.
Red Velvet was about to be interviewed and Jade Cargill beat her up. Jade left.
Jon Moxley did a promo about how The Good Brothers broke Eddie Kingston’s ankle. Moxley said he still had burns on his skins, he’s got a headache and now they want to put him in the ring against Cesar Bononi, who looks like a Baywatch lifeguard unless he kills him first. Moxley said that tonight, somebody is getting dropped on their head and choked unconscious.
Jon Moxley made his entrance for his match. Cesar Bononi was already in the ring.
Cesar Bononi vs. Jon Moxley (w/Ryan Nemeth & JD Drake)
Bononi with a shoulder tackle followed by punches. Moxley came back by driving the leg into his shoulder and then a dragon screw leg whip. Moxley stretched back on the left leg. Nemeth grabbed Moxley’s foot and then Bononi hit a suplex for two. They went to a picture in picture break.

Bononi was still in control until he missed a running knee as Moxley moved out of the way and Bononi hit the turnbuckle. Moxley came back with rolling elbows, a running clothesline and a hard slap to the face. Moxley hit a German Suplex along with a clothesline. Moxley hit a superplex for two and then he slapped on a cross armbreaker. The referee was distracted by Drake and Moxley hit the Paradigm Shift on Nemeth (I almost wrote Ziggler). Moxley jumped on Bononi’s back and slapped on a sleeper for the win after about eight minutes. Moxley is now 39-2-1 in AEW according to JR.
Winner by submission: Jon Moxley
Analysis: ** This was an eight-minute match that probably could have been half that length. It was boring for the first half, then Moxley made the big comeback and finished off the big guy. Never a doubt about the winner.
Team Taz was shown somewhere backstage with Taz talking about how everything was fine and dandy. Ricky Starks said he felt great on Dark last night. Brian Cage stood up saying that if Ricky tagged in sooner then they would have got the W sooner. Taz said that nobody can stop the path of rage.
Analysis: Every week they have Brian Cage speak up during one of their segments to show that he is able to think on his own and probably splitting from the group soon. Nobody can stop them according to Taz, yet they aren’t booked in a match on Dynamite again.
MJF was shown in the dressing room with his group The Pinnacle. MJF had a guy that was their stylist. MJF said he got them an interior director to fix their room. MJF opened up the bathroom and the Inner Circle guys were there. MJF tried to leave, but Inner Circle’s Jake Hager was there. That led to a brawl between the five Inner Circle guys battling with the five Pinnacle guys. Sammy Guevara took out Shawn Spears with a knee to the face and then he slammed a door into Shawn’s head. The big guys Jake Hager and Wardlow got in a battle with Hager slamming Wardlow through a massage table, which broke. FTR was battling with Santana and Ortiz with Cash Wheeler sent into an ice bath. Dax Harwood was bleeding from the head as Santana & Ortiz beat him up. Jericho was fighting MJF in the bathroom and Jericho put MJF’s head into a toilet. Jericho told MJF “the worst is yet to come” and Jericho tossed MJF into a Pepsi vending machine. Jericho told MJF that this is their dressing room, so Santana & Ortiz carried MJF out of the room. JR correctly said that MJF deserved every bit of this. The Inner Circle put their logo back on the wall by the room.
Analysis: That was very well done with Inner Circle getting their payback after The Pinnacle beat them up and Inner Circle was off for a few weeks. I think it makes sense to have Inner Circle come back in that setting because it was weeks ago when The Pinnacle stole Inner Circle’s dressing room, so it was a case of Jericho’s crew taking back what was already their dressing room. Jericho’s line about “the worst is yet to come” is the same line he used when he tossed Shawn Michaels through the glass TV “Jeritron” in 2008, so it was similar in that he tossed MJF into an object as well. I assume this will lead to a 5 on 5 match at the next PPV Double or Nothing whether that’s a Stadium Stampede or if they go for the Blood N Guts type match. There’s plenty of time to figure that out.
The Young Bucks, the AEW Tag Team Champions, were asked by Alex Marvez about Kenny Omega. Nick Jackson said he didn’t want to talk about it, Don Callis showed up, he spoke to Matt and Nick left. Callis said Matt broke his heart. Callis said that Kenny chose AEW because of Matt and Nick based on family. Callis said that Matt chose not to help Kenny. Callis said he didn’t care what Matt thinks about Don, but what is wrong with you? Callis said he didn’t know how to get through to Matt since he’s so cold and dead inside. Callis slapped Matt in the face, Matt grabbed him by the shirt and then let go. Callis was shocked that was it and called Matt pathetic. Callis left.
Analysis: I actually think this is one of the better storylines in the company. Kenny and The Young Bucks were among the founders of this company, so there is a lot of history there. When there’s a fracture in that relationship, it’s an easy story to tell and I like that there’s a slow burn building more and more every week. Callis is terrific as a heel manager that you just want to see get his ass kicked while Matt did a nice job here without even talking.

The trio of Penta El Zero M, Rey Fix and Laredo Kid entered. They showed a pre-tape promo with Alex the Spanish announcer translating the promo about how they are coming for all of the championships in AEW. The Good Brothers duo of Gallows and Anderson entered with AEW World Champion Kenny Omega along with Don Callis, who went to commentary for the match.
Kenny Omega, Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows vs. Rey Fenix, Penta El Zero M & Laredo Kid
Kid hit a dive over the top onto the heels on the ramp. Fenix walked the ropes and he hit a dive onto the heels as well. The masked trio all hit superkicks on Omega, Callis said that the referees need to get control of this thing (it’s AEW where the referees mostly suck) and another superkick got a nearfall as Anderson made the save. The three masked guys all hit dives onto the heels on the floor. Kid with a suplex on Omega, then two consecutive moonsaults and that got a two count. Omega with a back elbow followed by a clothesline. Gallows tagged in, Anderson with a knee to the spine and Gallows hit a roundhouse kick to the head. Gallows sent Kid into the corner and then Anderson hit a backbreaker for two. Omega tagged with an elbow drop. Gallows with a boot to the face of Kid and elbow drop leading to a PIP break.

Gallows with a body slam on Kid. Omega carried Gallows on his back and Anderson dumped on them for a triple splash for a two count. That was a fun spot. Kid hit an impressive DDT on Gallows and Penta got the hot tag. Penta with two neckbreakers and Fenix tagged in with a double Cutter on Omega/Anderson at the same time. Double team slam by the Lucha Bros. Kid tagged in with a moonsault, Penta in with a diving stomp, and Fenix with a Senton Bomb off the top for two with Omega saving Anderson. The masked trio delivered kicks, but then Anderson broke free with a kick on Fenix, back elbow by Omega, and Gallows with a splash. Triple team neckbreaker gets two with Penta saving Fenix. Anderson hit the impressive running kick to the face for a two count. Fenix sold that so well. Penta saved Fenix again, Kid with a missile dropkick, Omega with an elbow, and Fenix kicked Omega right into a Canadian Destroyer by Penta. Anderson with an uppercut and then Anderson with a spinebuster on Fenix for two with Laredo Kid hitting a headbutt for a two count. Omega tagged in against Kid, who hit a forearm and Kid jumped off the ropes with Omega hitting a Powerbomb. Omega hit a V-Trigger knee for a two count on Kid. Omega lifted up Kid, who countered into a headscissors and then a suicide dive by Kid. Lucha Bros sent G&A to the floor, Penta with a dive off the ropes and Omega went back in with Kid. Laredo with an enziguri kick and Fenix did a rope walk into a kick to the head of Omega. Kid with a Michinoku Driver for a two count. Kid went up top, Omega avoided a Phoenix Splash and Omega hit a V-Trigger knee. Omega hit the One Winged Angel for the pinfall win after 15 minutes.
Winners by pinfall: Kenny Omega, Karl Anderson & Doc Gallows
Analysis: ***3/4 It was a great traditional tag team match with Laredo Kid as the face in peril for most of it and then the pace really picked up after the hot tag. I like that it was slow-paced and like a regular tag in the first half because then all of the exciting action in the second half of the match meant a lot more. Omega took a lot of offense throughout the match with Kid standing out for his team although Fenix is the most spectacular on that team. I’m just saying Kid seemed like he was in the ring the most. I liked the last few minutes especially with some good nearfalls and then Omega managed to finish off Kid after avoiding the Phoenix leading to Kenny’s patented moves for the win. I like how Kenny usually wins tags matches he is in to show dominant he is.
Jon Moxley made his entrance on the stage with the Young Bucks following him out to the ring as they stood across from Omega, Anderson and Gallows. When Moxley and The Young Bucks entered the ring, the heels left and the faces stayed in the ring. That was it.
Analysis: A nice tease for a future six-man tag team match that will be a big match when it takes place next week.

There was an interview segment with Brit Baker being interviewed by her friend Reba, who still has a crutch for her fake injury. Baker noted her match with Thunder Rosa didn’t even count. Baker said she’ll continue to put AEW on the map. In other words, they had nothing else for her to do this week.
Nyla Rose and The Bunny entered with Matt Hardy along with the Hardy Family Office. Hardy said that Tay Conti would pay for the Dark Order’s sins. Hardy’s stable was with The Bunny. The Dark Order guys were on the stage to support Conti as well. That meant there were two stables at ringside. Lots of people.
Nyla Rose (w/Vickie Guerrero) & The Bunny (w/Hardy Family Office) vs. Hikaru Shida & Tay Conti (w/Dark Order)
Rose with a body slam and leg drop on Shida. Bunny tagged in leading to Shida getting a hiptoss. Shida set up Bunny by the apron and hit a running knee lift. Shida yelled at Matt Hardy, so Rose knocked down Shida from behind and that got a two count for Bunny.

The match returned with Shida remaining in the ring as the face in peril, but then Shida suplexed Bunny into Rose against the turnbuckle. Conti got the tag with judo throws, then a forearm on Rose and a knee strike on Bunny. Conti was on the apron with a kick that knocked down Bunny on the floor. Conti with a swinging backbreaker on Bunny. All of the guys on the floor got into a brawl that looked silly as a match was going on. Conti spun Bunny around and kneed her in the face. Rose made the save and then Shida kicked Rose out of the ring. Shida jumped onto a pile of wrestlers who caught her, then Conti jumped onto the pile of wrestlers and they all tumbled to the ground. (This same spot was done in the previous match. Don’t overdo the same spots. When JR does his podcast he complains about spots like that, but he was quiet here.) The announcers were shocked by that spot even though we just saw it in the previous match. I guess it’s more impressive when women are doing it. Vickie distracted the referee, Bunny hit Conti with a kendo stick and Bunny hit an elbow drop into a slam for the pinfall win after eight minutes.
Winners by pinfall: Nyla Rose & The Bunny
Analysis: **1/4 This was just an average match with a lot of chaos on the floor taking away from the action in the ring. There’s this need by the AEW bookers that feel like they need to get as many people on the show as possible, so they love doing brawls on the floor even though it took away from the action in the ring. The first match was full of wrestlers on the floor. The match before this had the save dive onto a pile. They need to book matches without repeating the same spots. Anyway, I’m happy The Bunny got the win because she’s very underutilized and maybe this is going to lead to a solid push for her.
Next week on AEW Dynamite:
* Jon Moxley & The Young Bucks vs. Kenny Omega, Doc Gallows & Karl Anderson
* The Bunny vs. Tay Conti
* TNT Champion Darby Allin defends the title vs. JD Drake. Excalibur claimed that Allin put out an open contract and Drake accepted. That’s how they avoid giving a title shot to somebody that is ranked.
* We will hear from The Inner Circle. They are babyfaces now.
* Jurassic Express vs. Bear Country
There was a backstage promo from Jurassic Express with Jungle Boy saying they’ll show them who is on the top of the food chain. Marko Stunt has some new tattoo. I don’t care, but apparently this match is presented by Godzilla vs. Kong.
The main event is Arcade Anarchy with Miro and Kip Sabian entering with Kip’s wife Penelope Ford. Yes, the boring video game feud is still going on and even gets to main event Dynamite for some reason. The ringside area was surrounded by arcade games and prizes.

Orange Cassidy and Chuck Taylor entered as the opponents.
Arcade Anarchy: Miro & Kip Sabian (w/Penelope Ford) vs. Orange Cassidy & Chuck Taylor
There was a referee for the match and it’s basically tornado tag team rules with weapons allowed. Miro hit a fallaway slam on Chuck. Sabian sent Cassidy into a Whack A Mole machine and then Cassidy sent Sabian into it followed by a few mallet shots. Miro got back into it with a forearm to the back of Cassidy and a hard body slam on the floor. Miro with a mallet shot to the back. Miro set up a barricade bridge by another part of the barricade. Miro sent Cassidy into the barricade and then Miro suplexed Taylor onto a barricade. Miro kept saying: “Come on, Charles.” That’s what he calls Taylor. Miro grabbed a steel chair from the prize rack around at ringside. Miro set up a chair against the turnbuckle, Cassidy tried to fight it and Miro whipped Cassidy into the chair. Taylor jumped off a Mortal Kombat video game machine with a punch on Miro. Cassidy hit Miro with a trash can and Taylor used a kendo stick as they repeatedly hit Miro to keep him down. Cassidy with a running trash can lid to the skull. Taylor and Cassidy ran over Miro with a barricade and they dumped another table on Miro. Sabian saved Miro from being pinned. Sabian with forearms on Taylor and a running dropkick on Cassidy. Sabian with a belly to back suplex on the floor and a running dropkick again on Cassidy to put him through some wood object. Taylor had a stuffed teddy bear and he dumped Lego in the ring. Cassidy wanted a superplex, Sabian kicked him and Sabian hit a sitout Powerbomb on the Lego for a two count with Cassidy making the save. Back in the ring, Cassidy with a DDT on the Lego and a Beach Break slam for a two count. Cassidy hit the Orange Punch for a two count with Penelope Ford pulling referee Aubrey Edwards out of the ring. Cassidy left the ring, so Ford kicked Cassidy in the groin. Kris Statlander, the alien girl who missed a long time with knee surgery, popped out of one of the arcade machines knocked down Ford. Excalibur: “The alien has emerged from the UFO catcher.” He said that seriously. Statlander slammed Ford though an air hockey table that was essentially a regular table with some air hockey stuff on top of it. Miro got back into it by tossing Cassidy across the floor. Miro hit both opponents with chairshots to the back. Miro kept on hitting Cassidy and Taylor with chairshots. Miro cleared off another table that he set up against a wall. There was a white van that we have seen in the past. It was Sue, who is Trent’s mom and Trent walked out of the van. Trent is back looking healthy. Trent attacked Miro with punches, so it was 3 on 2 now as they beat on Miro with punches. Miro kicked Taylor in the head, thrust kick to Cassidy and Miro sent up Trent across a barricade. Miro waved at Sue in the car and then he crawled up the front of the car, but Trent arrived and fought back against Miro. Miro sent Trent into the barricade. Miro picked up some Mortal Kombat II thing that wasn’t a video game, but something a lot lighter and Trent avoided it when Miro threw it at him. Trent threw a chair at Miro’s head. Trent gave Miro a Spear through the table that Miro set up earlier. Sabian was watching from the stage and Taylor gave Sabian a running powerslam off the stage through some gimmicked table bullshit leading to Taylor pinning Sabian to win after 15 minutes.
Winners by pinfall: Orange Cassidy & Chuck Taylor
Analysis: ***1/4 I liked the match even though some of it was silly. They worked hard, had some cool surprises with the returns of Trent and Statlander, plus they set up all the big spots well. It was a babyface win to put an end to this feud that didn’t really help anybody involved in the long run because I feel like Miro should be winning a lot more than he does. The commentary team tried really hard to put over Miro being this amazing wrestler that’s a killer that wants to go after titles, but he had to be in this match because of what happened at the Kip/Penelope wedding. In other words, they were talking him up as a big deal because his team was going to lose and that’s what happened. They used Sabian to take the fall, but it’s still a loss for Miro. It ended up being a 3 on 2 match with Trent getting heavily involved, so that’s another to protect Miro from the loss.
After the match was over, the Best Friends did their three-man hug routine. Kris Statlander went into the ring and hugged them too. They also showed Trent’s mom Sue in her van and Best Friends celebrated some more. That was the end of the show.
Analysis: They are a well-liked babyface act and a rare babyface stable in a company full of stables. Anyway, I hope Miro is out of this video game feud. Please give him something else to do because this went on for way too long.

Final Thoughts
It was another good episode of AEW Dynamite where I liked the second half more than the first half. There are still too many tag team matches every week, but that’s something this company loves along with stables. They continue to create stables with another group forming led by QT Marshall because Cody Rhodes is a dumb babyface that can’t see it coming. That’s the third new heel stable formed in the last month if you count The Pinnacle led by MJF and Matt Hardy’s group. Speaking of stables, I thought the best part of the show was The Inner Circle attacking MJF’s Pinnacle group in a backstage setting and looking dominant.
I liked the tag team match with Kenny Omega and Good Brothers vs. Fenix, Penta and Laredo Kid. It was a traditional tag in the first half and then a chaotic match in the second part of it, but I liked it a lot. The post match also set up Kenny and Good Brothers vs. Moxley and Young Bucks next week, so that’s a big match to look forward to. I also enjoyed Christian Cage’s match with Frankie Kazarian. Maybe a bit too long, but it showed that Christian and looked impressive in picking up a victory. I don’t like Miro losing the video game feud in the main event, but that’s why they had Kip Sabian there take the pin. I just think Miro is tremendously underutilized at this point.
There are about two months until the next PPV, so they are doing a slow build to a lot of things at this point. I think shows are better when we know what to look forward to at PPVs. When you’re this far out from a PPV, sometimes it just feels like tag team matches are thrown together to get more people on the show.
I had a reader on Twitter share a link with a review of this show where a guy rated this 10 out of 10. I don’t see how you can really do that, but it shows how fanatical some people are about the AEW product. I’m a fan too. I just don’t see the need to be overly biased. Maybe that’s just me. I don’t know.
