The John Report: AEW Dynamite 10/16/21 Review
It’s time for AEW Dynamite on a Saturday night. This week’s episode of Dynamite was pushed back from the usual Wednesday timeslot to Saturday because of NHL coverage on TNT in the United States. Next week’s Dynamite will be on Saturday too.
That means this week’s Dynamite followed Rampage from Friday night. I really enjoyed the Bryan Danielson vs. Minoru Suzuki match that was more like a fight or battle due to all the hard-hitting chops, kicks and other strikes. That was actually on Youtube before Rampage. Anyway, AEW’s next PPV Full Gear is in four weeks on November 13. We know Kenny Omega will defend the AEW World Title against “Hangman” Adam Page and we’ll learn more about the rest of the card in the weeks ahead.

The show started with pyro with Jim Ross delivering the line: “It’s Saturday night and you know what that means.” It’s the Brodie Lee tribute. There was some pyro that went off in the building and the Miami crowd was very loud. CM Punk’s music hit as Punk made his entrance to a big pop from the crowd. Loud “CM Punk” chants for him. Punk joined the commentary team of JR, Tony Schiavone and Excalibur for the show. No stage dive by Punk since there was a ramp just like on Rampage. The ramp is something AEW has sometimes, but not all the time.
The lights went out in the building as Malakai Black made his entrance in the darkness with the creepy mask on his face and then he sat in the ring waiting for his opponent. That opponent is the exciting youngster Dante Martin from the Top Flight tag team with Lio Rush joining Martin.
Malakai Black vs. Dante Martin (w/Lio Rush)
Black with a German Suplex attempt, Martin landed on his feet and Black hit two arm drags. Martin got out of an arm drag leading to a dropkick that sent Black out of the ring. Black was back in with a running back elbow. Martin avoided a charge, he jumped off the top and Black hit a Powerbomb into a single leg crab with Martin getting to the bottom rope to break the hold. Martin went for a pump kick, Black blocked, back heel trip and Black got a kneebar submission on the left leg with Martin using his free right leg to kick himself free. Martin went for a springboard attack, Black got a hold of him and Black turned it into a pin attempt. Martin jumped on Black’s shoulders leading to a Reverse Rana that spiked Black into the ring. Black went onto the ramp, Martin jumped to the top rope and hit a springboard flip onto Black on the ramp. Martin went for a moonsault off the top, Black moved, Martin sold the left leg and they exchanged strikes. Black with multiple kicks and then Martin hit an enziguri kick to the head. Black jumped off the middle ropes with the double knees, then a roundhouse kick and a bridging German Suplex for two. Great sequence there. The announcers mentioned being live on a Saturday night. Punk: “We’re live, pal.” A famous phrase in wrestling history. They battled on the top turnbuckle, Black was going for something, but Martin countered it and hit a top rope hurricanrana. Martin was selling a left knee injury. Martin hit a springboard moonsault off the top and credit Black for walking into it because it wasn’t going to connect until Black moved over to take the bump. Black applied a single leg crab on the left knee and then Black was selling a rib injury. Martin with a shoulder tackle to the ribs. Martin jumped off the top with the right leg only, then he stagged around and Black hit the Black Mass spin kick for the pinfall win after 10 minutes. That move still doesn’t have a name in AEW. Rush had a frustrated look on his face.
Winner by pinfall: Malakai Black
Analysis: ***1/4 This was a very good match with the young high-flier Martin having his left leg taken out from him and then he kept trying to fight back, but Black was too much for him. Good job by Black going for submissions on the left leg throughout the match as he should because that was the story they were telling. Black’s spin kick continues to look deadly with Martin doing a tremendous job of selling it like he was knocked out by it.
Post match, Black walked up the ramp and turned back to stare at Martin. Black nodded at him as if to say “good job” to him.

Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus were interviewed talking about how they were banged up and Christian was home with neck issues. Boy mentioned Luchasaurus was lucky to survive that Powerbomb last week (the one that was botched). The Super Elite’s Kenny Omega, Nick Jackson, Matt Jackson and Adam Cole showed up to beat up Jungle Boy/Luchasaurus easily. Lots of superkicks. They gave Luchasaurus a Powerbomb through a table with Omega celebrating his power.
Let’s Hear from The Inner Circle
Chris Jericho led out the Inner Circle group with Jake Hager, TNT Champion Sammy Guevara, Santana and Ortiz. The fans sang along with the “Judas” song for Jericho and the group. Santana spoke about how while he and Ortiz have been handling business, they have noticed their boys dealing with American Top Team.
Dan Lambert appeared with American Top Team and he was booed loudly. Lambert said that they have brought so many titles to Florida where they are from. Jericho called Lambert a “fat-faced dipshit” leading to the fans chanting that as well. Jericho called out the lovely Paige Van Zant saying maybe she had an obsession with Le Champion and maybe try to slide into Jericho’s DMs. Jericho said he wouldn’t touch her even with her husband’s genitalia. Jericho had a line where he called her a bitch.
Jericho said that the reunited Inner Circle is ready and they want a 5 on 5 tag team match. Jericho said that there is nobody crazier than the Inner Circle. When Lambert spoke, the fans booed him loudly. Lambert said that the Men of the Year have bigger plans and those plans involve championship gold. Lambert ripped Jericho for having a big mouth, Lambert said Santana/Ortiz have a big rapsheet and he ripped on Hager for having a big head. Lambert kept on talking about Hager’s huge head. Lambert said that the only guy holding gold is “Tiny Tim” aka Sammy Guevara and said that they will make their offer next week. Lambert ripped on the crowd. Scorpio Sky said that Jericho’s brain may be fuzzy because of a Jorge Masvidal knee and said that he has pinned Jericho twice. The fans chanted “you still suck” at Sky. Sammy said he didn’t care who it is because he’ll beat their asses. Sammy said that he’s the TNT Champion, so he’ll see those bitches next week and he’ll kick all of their asses. The teams trash talked from a distance to end it.
Analysis: It was fine for a promo exchange. Jericho is an excellent talker of course and I enjoy what Lambert does with his promos too. The fans are clearly into the rivalry, but AEW is taking their time with it. The 5 on 5 tag team match is likely happening at Full Gear, so they have a few weeks to set it up. Maybe the deal that Lambert hinted at will see Sammy have to defend the title against Scorpio Sky or Ethan Page, so if Sammy wins that match then Inner Circle gets the 5 on 5 tag match. That would make sense to me anyway.

There were two guys called Las Super Ranas representing Andrade El Idolo. They are dressed in frog outfits. Lucha Brothers entered with Alex Abrahantes with the AEW and AAA Tag Team Titles. This is for those AAA Tag Team Titles. Punk said that the body types of the guys in the costumes are similar to FTR.
AAA Tag Team Championships: Lucha Brothers (Rey Fenix & Penta El Zero Miedo) vs. Las Super Ranas (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler)
The first masked guy went for the mask of Fenix and then Fenix took the guy down. Fenix tried to take off the mask with the announcers all noting that it was FTR. Fenix and Penta took off the masks to reveal it was Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler. They went to a picture in picture break.

The match continued with Fenix running the ramp, jumping off the top and hitting a missile dropkick on both FTR guys. Penta jumped off the top with a double dropkick to the groin or the lower body anyway. Penta gave Wheeler a back body drop over the top onto Harwood. Penta hit a somersault dive onto Wheeler on the floor and then Fenix hit a dive off the top onto Harwood. The fans chanted “Holy Shit” for the champions as well as a “this is awesome” chant. Wheeler tried to hit Penta with a title, Penta avoided it and hit a superkick. Wheeler sent Penta into a table at ringside. Fenix avoided Wheeler and kicked him to the floor. Harwood with a pin attempt using the ropes for two. Harwood with a punch, but then Fenix hit a spin kick to the head. Tully Blanchard went to distract the referee, Fenix jumped off the top with a moonsault and Harwood hit Fenix in the face with the Tag Team Title. Harwood hit a brainbuster on Fenix for the pinfall win after about ten minutes.
Winners by pinfall AND NEW AAA Tag Team Champions: FTR (Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler)
Analysis: *** A good tag team match with the new champions cheating to win. It took a distraction and cheap title attack to help FTR win, so it’s not like it was a clean loss for Lucha Brothers. I don’t think the average AEW fan is going to care that much about the AAA Tag Team Titles, but since Lucha Brothers held those titles, they might as well lose them and keep the AEW Tag Team Titles to set up a title match for those titles down the road. Fenix stood out with some of his moves. That’s no surprise. He’s awesome. I like how FTR won by cheating. They’re heels. They should cheat.
Lio Rush and Dante Martin were interviewed by Tony Schiavone. Rush said that Martin lost by his own doing and he knows that. Rush said that from this day forward, Martin is going to have a new tag team partner and his name is Lio Rush. Martin touched fists with him.
Analysis: Dante’s tag team partner is his brother Darius, who is out with a knee injury, but should be back soon, so it should lead to some controversy.
Jon Moxley is up next against Wheeler Yuta.

There was a scene in a stairwell with Tony Schiavone catching up to FTR saying they stole the titles. FTR left. Andrade was there with suit guy and MJF showed up bragging about The Pinnacle since FTR are in that group led by MJF. When MJF saw Andrade, he wanted money, so Andrade’s guy in a suit gave him money and MJF told Andrade that he could only use MJF as a one time thing.
Wheeler Yuta entered with Orange Cassidy. Jon Moxley was pissed off walking in from the back part of the arena.
Jon Moxley vs. Wheeler Yuta (w/Orange Cassidy)
Moxley went after Yuta with punches then a suplex into a slam. Moxley with more punches. Moxley got in the referee’s face for making Moxley move back. Moxley hit the Paradigm Shift for the pinfall win in under one minute.
Winner by pinfall: Jon Moxley
Analysis: 1/2* A squash match for Jon Moxley. That’s fine. You need to book matches like that sometimes.
Post match, Yuta sold it like he was hurt while Dr. Sampson checked on him in the ring.
Serena Deeb was interviewed by Tony Schiavone somewhere backstage. Serena complained about the women’s division, then Hikaru Shida showed up to attack. They got into a brawl and the scene ended there. Punk had a funny comment saying “fantastic head of hair” on Serena Deeb in reference to their Straight Edge Society story in WWE over a decade ago where Serena had a shaved head.
Analysis: This company really likes booking fights during interview segments. Punk’s line about Serena’s hair was great.
The Young Bucks made their entrance with Don Callis and the stooge Brandon Cutler. Adam Cole was next with a 4-0 record in AEW. Cole did the “BOOM” pose on the ring apron. When he got into the ring, Cole did the “Adam Cole bay bay” pose with the crowd chanting along. Dark Order’s Evil Uno, Alex Reynolds and John Silver entered as the opponents.
Dark Order (Evil Uno, Alex Reynolds & John Silver) vs. Superkliq/The Elite (Matt Jackson, Nick Jackson & Adam Cole)
The Superkliq heels attacked Dark Order from behind right away. Silver countered a Powerbomb with a headscissors. Reynolds jumped onto the heels. The bell rang with the three Dark Order guys hit splashes as well as a slam on Cole and a double dropkick. Silver tossed Nick across the ring followed by an uppercut. Cole with a knee to the back, Silver punched him and hit some kicks. Nick sent Silver to the apron, Silver with a kick, then Silver went after everybody around the ring, but Matt stopped him with a superkick. Alex sent Nick off the apron, then Cole hit a superkick on Reynolds. Young Bucks hit a double superkick while Cole suplexed Reynolds on the knee. JR said at some point the referee might consider counting. Please JR, it’s Rick Knox, the worst referee. There’s no counting. Young Bucks hit a double hiptoss and a low double dropkick on Silver. Cole worked over Silver with kicks, then Silver tried to fight out of the corner and Cole hit a neckbreaker. They went to a picture in picture break.

The heels were still in control with Silver isolated from his team until Silver hit a double suplex. Uno tagged in, double clothesline and a neckbreaker on Cole. Uno took off Nick’s shoe, he sent Matt out of the ring and Nick elbowed Nick in the face. Uno used the sock to apply the Socko Claw to Nick! Huge pope for that. Cole saved Nick with a superkick. Cole held Uno in chinlock, then Silver/Reynolds took care of the Bucks and Silver/Reynolds did the kiss of the cheek. Cole was shocked. Back body drop to Cole onto the Bucks on the heels. Dark Order hit a bunch of moves including a Stunner, German Suplex and a power move from Evil Uno and that got a two count. Bucks sent Uno/Silver to the floor. Nicki hit a somersault dive over the top onto two guys. Reynolds knocked Matt off the apron. Cole and Reynolds exchanged kicks, Reynolds got a rollup on Cole for two and Reynolds hit an elevated knee. Bucks with a double superkick on Reynolds and Cole hit the Panama Sunrise on Reynolds. Young Bucks took care of Uno/Reynolds on the apron. Young Bucks hit the BTE Trigger knee to the head and Cole hit the Boom knee to the head for the pinfall win after 12 minutes.
Winners by pinfall: Superkliq/The Elite (Matt Jackson, Nick Jackson & Adam Cole)
Analysis: ***1/2 An exciting and fun match as usual with the Superkliq guys. Of course, there were moments where tag team rules were ignored with JR even mentioning, but it wasn’t as bad as some of their matches. I liked a lot of the spots where the Dark Order worked together and nearly got the win a few times, so that was cool to see them look competitive at least. Cole continues to rack up the wins since he usually gets the pin in tag matches and he’s undefeated in singles, so it’s fair to say AEW is booking him really well. I feel like AEW is going to introduce Trios Tag Team Titles soon (or early next year) and Superkliq will probably be the first champions.
Post match, Jungle Boy went out to the ring to attack the heels by going right after Adam Cole. Boy was sent out of the ring, Boy grabbed a steel chair and hit the stooge Brandon Cutler with it. Boy applied the Snare Trap submission to Cutler and sprayed some stuff from the can into Cutler’s face. Boy celebrated while the fans hummed along with his song.
Analysis: A good way to end the segment on a happy note.
There was a video shown of Cody Rhodes at the Rhodes Wrestling Academy run by Dustin Rhodes in Austin, Texas I think. They had Lee Johnson, Brock Anderson, Red Velvet and others there with Velvet slapping him in the face. Cody was shown training in the ring with Arn Anderson outside the ring. Cody was getting attacked by everybody from different directions. Cody said he didn’t understand what this was about. Arn showed him some photo and then mentioned Malakai Black, so Cody elbowed a guy that tried to hit him from behind. It showed Cody was ready.
Analysis: Are we supposed to believe in Cody now? It wasn’t like this was some Rocky Balboa training video that gets you fired up. It wasn’t interesting at all.
Let’s Hear from MJF
Maxwell Jacob Friedman made his entrance in wrestling gear and he got the microphone. MJF ripped on Miami and also criticized Justin Roberts for not introducing him for his match against Darby Allin. MJF announced himself while ripping the crowd for being poor. MJF is 226 pounds, he’s better than you and you know it…Maxwell Jacob Friedman…MJF. Tony Schiavone said there is no match. MJF claimed that Darby Allin no-showed the match like a gutless coward. MJF said that he broke Allin mentally. MJF told a “fat boy” in the crowd that he can’t hear him over all three of his chins. MJF acted shocked about how Darby Allin was attacked last week. MJF said it was still unprofessional for Darby not to show up for his match and MJF said that’s why Darby is the number two guy around there. MJF said that’s why Darby will always be mid and MJF is number one. MJF called Wardlow to come out there to give us a match with Darby Allin.
Wardlow brought referee Bryce Remsburg out to the ring. MJF told Bryce to count to ten and if Darby doesn’t come out there then you will raise MJF’s hand. MJF told “cueball” (Bryce is bald) to count. Bryce counted up to nine, but then the lights went out and Sting’s music played.
Sting got into the ring with the baseball bat. MJF shoved Wardlow in front of him and Sting hit Wardlow with the bat. Sting wanted MJF to come to the ring, MJF teased going into the ring and then MJF backed away like the coward that he is. MJF left to the back.
Analysis: More great promo work from MJF. The guy knows how to get heat and has no problem saying anything to get that heat. Allin was attacked backstage last week, so it made sense for him not to be there due to the attack. Sting showing up at the end worked fine since he is Darby’s buddy and it shows how MJF is a coward. I think we can pencil in MJF vs. Darby Allin at Full Gear now.

Anna Jay was interviewed by Tony Schiavone and Britt Baker interrupted with the AEW Women’s Title around her waist. Baker called the Dark Order losers while bragging about The Elite (Britt said “bay bay” since her boyfriend is Adam Cole) and insulted Dark Order more while saying Anna is nothing without Tay Conti. Anna and Britt got into a brawl that was broken up.
Analysis: Another interview that turned into a fight. A common theme on this show.
Penelope Ford vs. Kiera Hogan
CM Punk asked if Kiera is related to a certain Hogan and then they rattled off other people named Hogan, but not Hulk of course. Ford and Hogan exchanged strikes, Ford with a forearm and a whip to the corner. Ford went for a kick, Hogan moved and Hogan hit a neckbreaker for two. Ford whipped Hogan into the middle rope to take control. They went to a picture in picture break.

The match returned with Hogan setting up Ford on the top rope, Hogan got up to the top and hit a superplex. Tony said, “what a maneuver” and JR said that they haven’t had a “what a maneuver” in a long time. It’s a great Vince McMahon phrase, pal. Hogan and Ford exchanged punches/chops, Hogan with a back elbow and a shotgun dropkick. Hogan with a sliding kick for a two count. Hogan drove Ford’s head into Hogan’s knee. Ford hit a handspring off the ropes into a Cutter followed by a bridging Muta Lock submission win because Hogan tapped out after seven minutes.
Winner by submission: Penelope Ford
Analysis: *3/4 A decent showing here with some sloppy moments too. Some good moves by both women, but not a lot of heat for this match. Hogan has impressed me in other companies where I’ve watched her and showed off some of what she could do here. Ford hasn’t got a lot of wins on Dynamite, so it’s good to see her used a bit better.
Post match, Ruby Soho ran out to the ring to attack Ford with punches. Ruby tossed Ford out of the ring and then Ruby stayed in the ring. The Bunny helped Ford back up. That ended it.
Analysis: Ford hit Ruby with brass knuckles on Rampage on Friday, so this was Ruby getting some payback.
A video package aired about Miro talking about getting beat and losing the TNT Title. Miro said he can’t go home like this. Miro wondered if he displeased you and not given you enough praise. Miro said he had a body of granite, but a neck of sand and he wondered if it was a joke. Miro wondered why you have forsaken your champion. Miro said his God made no mistake. Miro said that everyone else will know pain until he becomes your favorite champion and he’ll see her once again.
Analysis: It’s hard to decipher all of that. I know Miro thanks God all the time, so that was part of what he was talking about, but it’s tough to really understand it all.
Let’s Hear from Hangman Page
Tony Schiavone was in the ring and he introduced “Hangman” Adam Page, who earned the AEW World Title shot during the ladder match last week. Tony noted Page will challenge Omega for the AEW World Title at Full Gear on November 13. Meanwhile, a year ago Page met Omega in the finals of the AEW World Title Eliminator tournament and now they meet for the AEW World Title.
Page said that in 2019 he believed that they (Young Bucks, Kenny Omega and him) would change the world, but it feels like the world changed us or at least it changed him. Page said he failed to become the first AEW World Champion. Page said he lost matches, then it felt like he lost more like his confidence, he lost his friends and he lost himself. Page said that the one thing that grew week after week was these people chanting “Cowboy Shit” for him and that led to the fans chanting that right on cue. Page said that Cowboy Shit was about learning from the past and accepting new friends. Page talked about his new friends sticking up for him. Page talked about how he got to be home for the birth of his beautiful baby boy and said that’s Cowboy Shit. Page said that last week, he put his body on the line and he got a hold of something that eluded him the whole time. Page said that it’s Cowboy shit to get back up on the saddle again. Page said that he can’t predict how Full Gear will end for him, but he feels like you all still believe in him and for the first time in his life, he believes in himself. Page said that he promises he will give us everything, he will give his heart, his soul, his blood, his sweat and his tears. Page said that the one thing he is sure about is he will give you “Cowboy Shit.” Page put down the microphone and the fans cheered him.
Analysis: I thought this was great. Page finally believes himself and did a nice job of talking about what Cowboy Shit means to him. When Page left for a few months, it was to be with his wife for the birth of their son, so I’m glad he mentioned being home for that. Page is one of the most likable guys in AEW and I think it’s the right time for him the AEW World Championship from Kenny Omega. Why not? It feels like the timing is right.
They plugged AEW Rampage next Friday. Next week on Dynamite on Saturday: Malakai Black vs. Cody Rhodes and two World Title Eliminator matches.
Main event time with Bryan Danielson and Bobby Fish is up next.

Bobby Fish made his entrance for the main event first and there wasn’t much of a reaction for him. Bryan Danielson got a big pop with “yes” chants. Bryan had a very physical 20-minute match against Minoru Suzuki on Rampage and it was a rough one for Bryan, I’m sure.
Bryan Danielson vs. Bobby Fish
Fish worked over Bryan with strikes to the body and hard kicks to the back. Bryan got control by stepping on the back of the knees, then a face gouge and a jump onto the knees. Fish with a back kick to the ribs followed by a forearm to the head. Bryan did a backflip off the ropes, then he ran the ropes and Fish kicked him in the chest. Punk said “Daniel Bryan” by accident and Fish connected more kicks. Bryan hit a back body drop over the top to the floor. Bryan hit a suicide dive on Fish on the floor. Bryan went for a running knee on the apron, Fish moved and Bryan hit the ring post. That led to a break.

There were about six minutes left as the match continued with Fish wrenching the left knee of Danielson around the ropes. Fish kicked Bryan in the back of the leg and a sliding lariat. Fish worked over Bryan with a half crap submission, then Bryan came back with a trip and Bryan turned it into an ankle lock. Bryan captured the left leg of Fish followed by a German Suplex. Bryan with a dragon screw leg whip two times. Bryan rammed Fish’s left knee against the ring post three times. Bryan with a chop block to the back of the left knee. Fish blocked a kick and hit a backdrop driver with a knee capture or a two count. Fish set up Bryan on the top rope leading to an Avalanche Falcon Arrow slam off the top for two. Fish went for a kneebar submission, but Bryan turned it into his own kneebar submission. They took turns kicking eachother in the head. Bryan got back up leading to a heel hook submission twisting the knee and Fish tapped out to give Bryan the win. It went 13 minutes.
Winner by submission: Bryan Danielson
Analysis: ***1/2 A strong technical wrestling match as expected by wrestlers of this caliber. I think it’s interesting that instead of Bryan dominating most of the match, it was very even the whole way with Fish fighting back and nearly getting the win a few times. It’s not like Bryan was booked in a way where he is a much bigger star than Fish even though you can say that Bryan is a much bigger star. They kept doing similar moves, but then it was a violent-looking heel hook twist by Bryan that put Fish away. Punk did a great job of explaining certain moves and why they work so well too.
They showed the World Title tournament brackets. It was very quick.
Analysis: I don’t understand the logic of who is in the tournament and who is not. You’re telling me that 10 and Dustin should be in the tournament, but a guy like Malakai Black isn’t in it? They’re also missing names like Miro, Darby Allin and MJF to name a few. I get that they don’t want certain people to lose, so that’s why they are absent. It’s just weird how they put these eight people, yet leave out others. Anyway, the finals will likely be Danielson vs. Moxley, which is certainly fine with me. That will be an awesome match to do at Full Gear. I’ll pick Danielson to win it.
Danielson continued to celebrate his victory. That was the end of Dynamite for this week.

Final Thoughts
A pretty good show from top to bottom. There wasn’t one match that really stood out above the others, but almost everything was good to great. I don’t have many complaints about the matches. I try to explain my ratings for everything, so read the analysis for more of my thoughts.
The promos were solid with “Hangman” Adam Page delivering one of the strongest interviews I’ve ever seen from him. Page did a nice job of talking about his history over the last two years, then how he has managed to overcome everything to bounce back and get an AEW World Title shot. It was like a defining promo telling the audience what “Cowboy Shit” is all about. As for other interviews, way too much “one person speaks and another attacks” on this show. I know AEW wants to further stories, but it felt like a bit much.
I liked CM Punk on commentary once again. He had some funny lines and even a few screw ups saying “Daniel Bryan” at one point, but then he made fun of himself for it, so that’s great too.
There weren’t any big angles or anything like that. I doubt they want to do major things on a Saturday night show where the audience is going to be lower than the usual Wednesday show.
