WWE Talent Surprised By Release Of Veteran Star
The release of a veteran WWE wrestler surprised a lot of other people in the company.
Multiple WWE wrestlers were released by the company on February 7th. Several of them had long runs with the company including Cedric Alexander, the Authors of Pain, Paul Ellering, Isla Dawn, and Blair Davenport. Elektra Lopez was also fired on the same day she was on SmackDown.
It was also reported that Sonya Deville, who started on Tough Enough in 2015 and had been under contract for the last decade, would not have her contract renewed.
Sonya Deville recently spoke about her WWE release while admitting that she was shocked to learn she was being let go.
“I got the call. My contract was not being renewed with the WWE. I got the phone call. We were in the middle of negotiations, so I thought the phone call was going to be middle ground that we met on. An agreement on a contract. It was, ‘We are not renewing your contract.’ I was shocked.
At the end of the day, it’s a business. I think business-minded. For whatever the reason is, I don’t know the reason, and I could sit here and try to come up with one or guess. ‘It was definitely that. I said or did that.’
I put 150% effort in the entire ten years, but most importantly the last three. I went down to the Performance Center on my own time. Moved there for two months to train to get the rust off.”
During her WWE career, Deville was a former Women’s Tag Team Champion with Chelsea Green, but she was not a singles champion.
Other WWE Superstars Also Surprised By Sonya Deville Being Let Go
Fightful Select reports that there are women in WWE who were frustrated about Deville being cut because they were also aware that she was negotiating a new deal. Fightful added that it “didn’t instill confidence when they aren’t being used by the company.”
The Fightful report also mentioned that they were told that four days earlier, Deville was told that WWE wanted to keep her, which is similar to what Deville said publicly.
It had been reported earlier in the week by Fightful that women in the company were frustrated about not being used well and how the women’s division is ignored at times on the main roster.
In a follow up to that, Fightful claims that several women were told that their time will come and to be patient for when they are called upon in storylines.
