Insight Into WrestleMania 39 Main Event Plans

With WrestleMania 39 going two nights again, there is speculation about what’s going to be the main event on each night.

Ever since the WrestleMania 36 event took place in front of no fans in 2020, WWE has decided to go with two-night WrestleMania main events. It appears that this strategy is what WWE is going to continue to do in the years ahead.

At last year’s Wrestlemania 38 event, Steve Austin beat Kevin Owens in the main event of night one because it was Austin’s first WWE match in 19 years. The Sunday main event saw Universal Champion Roman Reigns beat Brock Lesnar to win WWE Title, which has led to Reigns being called the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion for the past 11 months.

Looking ahead to this year’s WrestleMania 39 event at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on April 1st & April 2nd, the likely main event of night two will see Reigns defend the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against the Royal Rumble winner, Cody Rhodes.

In this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter (available via subscription), Dave Meltzer wrote about the potential WrestleMania 39 main event matches.

“Reigns vs. Rhodes is expected to headline the second night. There is no decision on the main event past an internal feeling that Charlotte Flair vs. Rhea Ripley right now is the favorite.”

“There is a push feeling for sponsors and political reasons after men main evented both nights last year it would be good for a women’s match to headline and the feeling Flair vs. Ripley is stronger than Bianca Belair vs. Asuka for the spot. If there is Usos vs. Zayn & Kevin Owens, one would think that would be the other favorite.”

Rhea Ripley earned the WrestleMania 39 match against Smackdown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair thanks to Ripley’s Royal Rumble win. Asuka gets her Raw Women’s Title match against Bianca Belair thanks to her Elimination Chamber win last week.
