“Vince Is Laughing, Eve Is Crying” – Ex-WWE Star Reveals Backstage Reaction To Shocking Botch
A former WWE star has opened up about a major botch.
Kaitlyn had a stint in the sports entertainment juggernaut in the 2010s, even winning the Divas Championship on one occasion. She decided to end her WWE run on January 8, 2014, to pursue other endeavors, and retired from pro wrestling later that year.
She made her WWE return in the 2018 Mae Young Classic tournament, defeating Kavita Devi in the first round. Unfortunately, the 39-year-old star was eliminated by Mia Yim (aka Michin) in the next match.
Kaitlyn also showed up in a backstage segment on the RAW Reunion show in 2019.
Kaitlyn makes big WWE revelation
While speaking on the Rewind Recap Relive podcast, Kaitlyn spoke about a shocking botch and how Vince McMahon reacted to it.
The incident occurred during the August 20, 2012, edition of WWE RAW. Kaitlyn battled Aksana, Alicia Fox, Eve Torres, Natalya, Rosa Mendes, and Tamina Snuka in a battle royal to determine the number one contender for the Divas Title. While Eve was planned to win, Kaitlyn emerged as the victor in the end due to a botch.
Kaitlyn recalled what exactly happened during her recent interview.
“The match happens. I was supposed to clothesline her over the top rope. She was going to slip out, hang on, pull me out, eliminate me. Boom. She’s number one contender. Layla’s down there with the title, sitting with the commentary. I clotheslined her, and the physics were off, and she didn’t go all the way over. So we set back up. We got back into the position, hit the ropes. I closed under as hard as I could because I didn’t want that to happen again. I hit her so hard that she could not hold on. She fell and got eliminated. So I’m standing in the ring as number one contender. I just won the match.
The former WWE Divas Champion revealed she was worried about getting fired when she went backstage. However, Vince McMahon was laughing instead. And understandably, Eve Torres was crying.
[It] wasn’t supposed to happen. Raw is live. There’s only a seven-second delay. The referee that was in the ring with me was Brad Maddox, which was his first time to ref live TV. Because he’s mic’d up, so everybody in the gorilla is like she needs to celebrate. So he grabs my hand. Eventually, we go to commercial, and I was just like, ‘Oh my God.’ In a moment like that, again Vince is at every TV. He’s sitting in a chair and gorilla, like your agents there, it’s usually 10 people or so in there. I’m walking back into gorilla. Lights are out. It’s that commercial. I don’t know if I’m going to get fired, yelled at, like whatever. So I opened the curtain to gorilla, and Vince is laughing. Eve is crying. Tom, the writer, looks at me. He gives me a hug. He’s like, ‘Oh my god, I’m so happy for you.’
Kaitlyn further stated that there was some backlash following her win, and some female stars even wanted the opportunity to be taken away from her.
It was like such a divine moment because I’m like, here I am, this another opportunity that just kind of like… I happened to be in the right place and do the right thing. Everything just aligned. There was some pushback. Some of the girls wanted to get me written out, and Eve was very upset. Because again, there was only one title then. The matches were so short. So it’s like everyone was kind of fighting for that one position.” [H/T: Fightful]
