John Cena Teaming Up With AJ Styles On WWE SmackDown

AJ Styles John Cena WWE SmackDown

John Cena and AJ Styles may be former rivals in WWE, but they will also be tag team partners on SmackDown.

There is a big tag team match set for tonight’s edition of WWE SmackDown on Fox. It has been reported by PWInsider’s Mike Johnson that former WWE Champions John Cena & AJ Styles will team up against the brother tag team of Jimmy Uso & Solo Sikoa.

That match between Cena & Styles face Jimmy & Solo actually happened as a dark match after Smackdown last week in Denver. Cena pinned Jimmy to win the match for his team.

In the main event of last week’s Smackdown in Denver, John Cena was interviewed by Grayson Waller although Cena wasn’t able to talk due to an interruption from Jimmy Uso. When Solo Sikoa arrived, it looked like he might attack his brother, but instead, he hit John Cena with a superkick. AJ Styles ran out for the save. Cena & Styles cleaned house to end the show.

Based on the way the storyline has gone, it was assumed by many fans that the Cena/Styles tag team match against Jimmy/Solo would be at Fastlane on October 7th, but apparently it’s happening on Smackdown. As of this writing, WWE has yet to advertise it.

John Cena had a legendary rivalry with AJ Styles

The fact that John Cena is now a tag team partner of AJ Styles might surprise some fans that remember their epic 2016-17 rivalry. It was in 2016 when Styles made his WWE debut. After a feud with Roman Reigns, Styles set his sights on Cena for a dream match.

That rivalry between Cena and Styles would produce some of the best matches in the careers of both future WWE Hall of Famers. They had an epic match at SummerSlam 2016 to put an end to the feud at that point.

At Royal Rumble 2017, Cena beat Styles for what was Cena’s 16th WWE World Title, which ties the World Title reign record with Ric Flair. That match was considered a match of the year in 2017 by a lot of people.

Tonight on Smackdown in Phoenix (Glendale), it’s not about Cena facing Styles, but rather how they work together. It also could lead to Styles getting an Undisputed WWE Universal Title match against Roman Reigns at some point in the future.
