GUNTHER’s historic Intercontinental Championship run might be in peril as his next official title defense has been confirmed for next week’s RAW.

On the August 14th episode of Monday Night RAW, the current Intercontinental Champion mocked the local crowd in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, only to be confronted by the man that had been causing him issues over the past few weeks, Chad Gable.

Gable vowed to take the IC title from GUNTHER, and then proved that he was more than just talk when he beat Giovanni Vinci in about five minutes of action.

Meanwhile, the champion wasn’t one to let his challenger get the better of him. And so, GUNTHER faced Otis immediately after Gable’s match and won in less time and had an even more impactful moment when he hit a powerbomb on the 360-pound Otis.

Immediately after GUNTHER got the three-count on Otis, Gable hit him with a German suplex and bailed to the floor. Not long afterwards, WWE sent out a tweet confirming the Intercontinental Championship match for August 21st.

As of this writing, GUNTHER has been Intercontinental champion for 430 days, which is the second-longest in the title’s history. To surpass the Honky Tonk Man’s 454-day record, he needs to hold the belt until September 8th, which lands on a Friday this year.

Some of the people that have tried and failed to capture the WWE Intercontinental Championship in the last year-and-a-half include Drew McIntyre, Sheamus, Matt Riddle, Braun Strowman, and Ricochet.
