Cody Rhodes Confirms WWE Character Change Before WrestleMania 42
Cody Rhodes won the Undisputed WWE Championship from Drew McIntyre on the March 6 edition of Friday Night SmackDown. He is now set to put the title on the line against Randy Orton in the main event of WrestleMania 42 Night 1.
Ahead of his match at WrestleMania 42, Rhodes appeared for an interview on Complex Graps The Podcast, where he subtly hinted at a possible character change. Rhodes is a three-time Undisputed WWE Champion, but he still feels like he hasn’t fully embraced his real character in WWE.
He stated that he recently heard someone calling him a “golden boy,” which was meant as an insult because people think WWE favors him a lot. However, he did not take it in a negative way. Instead, he revealed that he is planning to embrace the “golden boy” character to its full limit.
“Even at my experience level in pro wrestling, I still haven’t fully found who I am, and I would like this to be the reign that defines who I am.”
“I heard a term, that was said in a condescending fashion, but I didn’t take it that way, I actually blushed. I heard someone say ‘golden boy’, and I loved it. I don’t know if I was supposed to love it, especially with how they were saying it. But I thought, ‘okay, maybe I’ll lean into that’, and maybe that’s the identity of this reign.”
Cody Rhodes Doesn’t Mind Becoming The “Golden Boy” Of WWE
Cody Rhodes added that he has certainly outdone some of the best in the business and defeated some of his biggest competition. Because of that, he does not mind being called a golden boy. According to him, the moniker was not simply given to him—he has earned it through hard work and determination.
“I’m certainly out there in terms of output, and hopefully this is the one time I say it otherwise it becomes self obsessed, but I’m outrunning everybody on the treadmill right now, even the guy I consider my largest competition. If that’s gonna be the case, I’ll take this golden boy moniker and see where it goes.”
“I might even dial up my WrestleMania gear to lean into it further. I know that’s a bit vague but I’d like this reign to give me an identity that perhaps I’ve been seeking, because every reign is different.”
