Christian Cage Wins IMPACT World Title

Christian Cage

Christian Cage is the new IMPACT World Champion!

The win marks Cage’s first World Title reign in a decade. On that occasion in 2011 the Canadian beat Randy Orton to claim WWE’s World Heavyweight Championship for the second time.

On the debut episode of AEW Rampage, Omega appeared to have the match won following a vicious V-Trigger, but somehow Cage kicked out. It was then Christian’s turn to grab the momentum, gaining a couple of of near falls of his own. First with a Spear and then a Frog Splash. However, Omega survived.

As desperation crept in, the Young Bucks arrived with a chair as Don Callis distracted the referee, but Christian wasn’t to be denied. The former WWE Superstar tuned the tables on Omega hitting a Killswitch on the chair to grab the win.

With victory, Cage became only one of four men to get the better of Kenny Omega in singles competition since AEW’s inception. The others being Chris Jericho, Jon Moxley and PAC.

Following a successful spell in WWE, Christian Cage signed with TNA back in 2005. Over the course of the next three years, Cage won the NWA World Heavyweight Championship on two occasions. At the time the championship represented TNA’s top prize. As a result, despite being a World Champion with the company, Cage has never previously held the TNA or IMPACT World Titles. The belt Christian won is currently held by Nick Aldis in NWA.

After leaving TNA in 2008, Christian returned to WWE where he would become a two-time World Heavyweight Champion. However, the Canadian star was forced to retire in 2014 as a result of a series of concussions.

It was a school of thought that would be thrown totally on its head in January 2021 when Christian appeared in the Royal Rumble Match. While many expected the former tag team star to stay with WWE, he signed with AEW just two months later. Immediately after signing, the Canadian declared his intention defeat Kenny Omega for the AEW World Championship.

Over the next five months, Cage has remained undefeated and climbed to the top of the AEW rankings. This led to it being announced that he will face Omega for the AEW World Championship at All Out on September 5th.

On the same night it was confirmed that Cage would also challenge for IMPACT gold.
