Whilst many dream of a high-profile match at WrestleMania, AJ Styles has admitted to pitching to face a huge star at the event.
With a career already spanning over a decade and a half, AJ Styles has fought all of the top talent during his global travels. Even before signing for WWE he was wrestling all of the main wrestlers in the likes of IMPACT Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling.
It was almost inevitable that ‘The Phenomenal One’ would eventually make the move to WWE, and he made his debut as a surprise entrant in the 2016 Royal Rumble. His impact was immediate, and he went on to hold the World Championship within his first nine months in the company.
Many would call AJ Styles’ Boneyard Match with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 36 the most high-profile of his time in WWE so far. Bringing down the curtain on the career of ‘The Dead Man’, the match was greeted with acclaim from critics despite the cinematic nature.
Despite facing someone on the level of The Undertaker, AJ Styles has made it no secret that he desires more similar moments at ‘The Showcase Of The Immortals’. In the past he has discussed pushing WWE to make an offer for him to get a match with Shawn Michaels, however he has now named another star he pitched to face.
Speaking to Fightful Select, the former World Champion discussed how he made a play to get a match with Triple H, but it never came off.
Well, the last person I tried was Triple H. I didn’t get him. I don’t know who the next guy is or if there will be another one. Now we’ve got the younger talent coming up. Maybe I’m the match that they would like to have. I would like to have some good ones before I retire. Who knows? I don’t know who’s going to be next. None of us do. We’ll just have to see what happens.
Triple H officially retired from active competition at WrestleMania 38 following a serious cardiac event. Following the departure from WWE of Vince McMahon, ‘The Game’ has assumed the roles of Head Of Creative and Head Of Talent Relations.
