Sami Zayn & The Usos

Welcome back, TJR readers! Did you spend all day Friday trying to think of new huge announcements, and missed WWE Smackdown? Perhaps you were too busy washing tequila out of your eyes, and missed Raw.

Worry not for I have returned with another edition of The Top Ten Wrestling Stories of the Week.

10. AEW All Atlantic Championship “Leveled Up”

Tony Khan was back this week on AEW Dynamite with another “huge announcement.” This week Khan announced that the AEW All-Atlantic Championship currently held by Orange Cassidy, is getting “leveled up” and will now be known as the AEW International Championship. Cassidy will defend the new International Championship this Wednesday on Dynamite against Jeff Jarrett. Tony Khan is expected to make another “huge announcement” this Wednesday on Dynamite as well, with him reportedly announcing that he saved a bunch of money on his car insurance by switching to Geico. 9. Dragon Lee Appears on NXT

After signing with WWE last December, Dragon Lee finally made his highly anticipated debut this week at NXT Roadblock. Lee appeared in the crowd during the event, with the announcers hyping all his former accolades. Lee was rumored to be the person that Shawn Michaels would choose to face Grayson Waller at NXT Stand & Deliver, but that spot ended up going to Johnny Gargano. Lee has held championships in ROH, NJPW as well CMLL in Mexico, and was a highly sought-after free agent before choosing to sign with the WWE. Interestingly, Lee also competed in a match on AEW Dynamite but decided against signing with AEW due to being afraid of the Dark. (TJRWrestling)

8. WWE Backlash to Take Place From San Juan, Puerto Rico

For the first time since New Year’s Revolution 2005, WWE will be holding a PLE in Puerto Rico. WWE Backlash is scheduled to take place Saturday, May 6, live from the Coliseo de Puerto Rico José Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Already announced for the event is two-time GRAMMY award-winning and global recording artist Bad Bunny, who will be returning to his home country to host the event. It is unknown if Bunny will return to the ring at Backlash, or just make old people like me shake our heads with his music. (TJRWrestling)

7. Trish Stratus to Compete at WrestleMania 39

Becky Lynch will be teaming with two WWE Hall of Famers at WrestleMania 39. After weeks of speculation, it was confirmed this week on Raw, that Trish Stratus will be returning to the ring. Stratus will be teaming up with WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Becky Lynch and Lita to face Bayley, IYO SKY and Dakota Kai of Damage CTRL. This will be Stratus’s first match since losing to Charlotte Flair at SummerSlam 2019. The 2019 match was supposed to be Stratus’s retirement match, but clearly, after seeing Ric Flair’s final match, she figured she can’t do any worse. (TJRWrestling)

6. The House of Black Capture the AEW Trios Titles

The Elite didn’t get to enjoy the titles that were made for them for very long. This past Saturday at AEW Revolution, Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks lost the AEW Trios Titles to the House of Black team of Malakai Black, Buddy Matthews and Brody King. The Elite just captured the titles this past January by winning the best-of-seven series against Death Triangle. This is actually the second time that The Elite has lost the Trios Titles, with them likely just being happy that they don’t have any black eyes and bite marks this time. (TJRWrestling)

5. MJF Throws a Drink on a Child During AEW Title Match

MJF defeated Bryan Danielson in an incredible 60-minute Iron Man Match this past Saturday at AEW Revolution. That should have been the headline this week, unfortunately however, an incident during the match overshadowed what was an amazing match. While MJF was outside of the ring, he suddenly took a drink from a mother in the crowd and threw it on her young son. This drink was reportedly tequila, and ended up burning the child’s eyes. The child was taken backstage and got to meet his favorite wrestler Powerhouse Hobbs to help make up for the incident. As always an incident like this was heavily debated by the internet wrestling community, with some loving the heel actions by MJF while others were appalled by them. I would be furious if a wrestler threw my alcoholic drink in my child’s face, as I know how much one of those drinks costs! (TJRWrestling)

4. FTR Returns At AEW Revolution

After months of speculation, FTR has decided to stay with AEW. This past Saturday at AEW Revolution, FTR made their shocking return to the company. FTR appeared after The Gunns successfully defended the AEW Tag Team Championships, attacking the champions. FTR’s contract was reportedly set to expire next month with AEW, with many believing they were going to be done with the company. Surprisingly FTR were also recently chosen as the 2022 Wrestling Observer Tag Team of the Year, without wrestling a single match in Japan. (TJRWrestling)

3. TNT Championship Changes Hands Twice

Wardlow once again captured the AEW TNT Championship this past Saturday at AEW Revolution, Wardlow was able to defeat Samoa Joe to capture the TNT title. This was Wardlow’s second reign as TNT champion, with him just losing the title to Joe last November. The rest of the week was not good news for Wardlow however, as he lost the title to Powerhouse Hobbs this past Wednesday on Dynamite. Making matters even worse, Wardlow’s rental car was broken into after Revolution with the TNT title belt actually being stolen. As of this writing, the title has not been recovered, with Tony Khan deciding to add five new championships to replace it. (TJRWrestling)

2. John Cena to Wrestle at WrestleMania 39

WWE fans will not have to wait until the end of the year again to see John Cena compete in a match. After being heavily rumored for several weeks, it was made announced this week that Cena will be facing Austin Theory at WrestleMania 39. Cena appeared live in the ring this past Monday on Raw, and was quickly interrupted by Theory. Theory then proceeded to challenge Cena to the match at Mania, with Cena actually initially turning Theory down before eventually accepting the match. Cena appearing on Raw was such a big deal that Vince McMahon was backstage to visit with him. McMahon reportedly is now also sporting new facial hair, with him now possibly having to pay out even more hush money after offering free mustache rides. (TJRWrestling)

1. Jey Uso Attacks Sami Zayn

Jey Uso finally chose a side between Sami Zayn and The Bloodline this week. This past Monday on Raw, Zayn faced Jimmy Uso in a one-on-one match. The finish of the match saw Jey suddenly appear in the crowd, distracting his brother and allowing Zayn to get the win. After the match, Jey went left the ring and embraced Zayn, before shockingly hitting Zayn with a superkick. The Usos and Solo Sikoa then all began to attack Zayn, until surprisingly Cody Rhodes, and not Kevin Owens, made the save. Owens and Zayn are still expected to face The Usos at WrestleMania 39 for the WWE Undisputed Tag Team Championships, which may be the best Canadian team since John Canton and the internet.
