WWE News: Rey Mysterio to Return at Smackdown 1000 on Oct. 16, Big Show in Action This Week on Smackdown
The official return of Rey Mysterio to WWE is set. We reported a few weeks ago that Mysterio was headed back to WWE shortly, but we didn’t know when his return would be exactly. Now we know: October 16 on Smackdown 1000 from Washington, DC.
The twitter account @WrestleVotes was the first to report on the Mysterio appearance on Smackdown 1000. They are good Twitter follow for some interesting scoops once in a while.
Regarding Rey Mysterio, some within the company wanted a “surprise pop” for the Australia stadium show coming up on Saturday, however I’m hearing his return is more likely to happen in 2 weeks at SmackDown 1000. Mysterio was a staple of SD in the early days. Makes sense.

The announcement of Mysterio’s return was made on Sunday afternoon. Here are more details from WWE.com on Mysterio’s appearance:
SmackDown 1000 now has another number of significance attached to it. That number is 619, because Rey Mysterio is back! The SmackDown legend will appear on the history-making episode, marking his return to the blue brand for the first time in more than four years.
The former WWE and World Heavyweight Champion is best remembered for energizing SmackDown with his signature aerial attack, unbelievable athleticism and never-say-die attitude. Mysterio was a cornerstone of Team Blue since the first brand split in March 2002 and helped define the SmackDown spirit.

It’s not known right now if Mysterio will be a regular on Raw or Smackdown, but bringing him back on Smackdown may suggest that he’s going to be back on the blue brand where he spent most of his career during his previous WWE run from 2002 to 2015. The 43-year-old is expected to work a part-time schedule, which means working on whatever TV show he is booked on, major pay-per-views and likely a limited house show schedule, if he appears at any house shows at all.
Mysterio has yet to comment on his return on social media.
As far as this week’s Smackdown goes, they have announced two qualifying matches for the “WWE World Cup” tournament that will take place at WWE Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia in November 2. Those matches are:
Big Show vs. Randy Orton
Samoa Joe vs. Jeff Hardy
In addition to those matches, Smackdown will have Becky Lynch defend the SD Women’s Championship against Charlotte Flair one more time in a match where if Lynch is disqualified like she was at Super Show-Down, she will lose the title.
