WWE Star Returns To School For New Degree At 42
A veteran WWE superstar is going to continue his education while continuing to work for the company.
The Motor City Machine Guns duo of Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin joined WWE in October 2024 after having great runs in TNA, during which they won every title there is to win in that company.
In their WWE careers so far, MCMG have been on the SmackDown brand and have held one reign as Tag Team Champions.
While the tag team division may not be featured all the time heavily, they remain a big part of the division as one of the best tag teams of the last 20+ years.
Away from the ring, Alex Shelley is a physical therapist who announced in a TikTok video that he would continue his education while working for WWE.
Shelley has enrolled in classes at Franklin University to maintain his physiotherapy license and his National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification. Shelley added that he is currently pursuing his third degree in Exercise Science.
“In the new year, a lot of people are going to try a lot of new things,” Shelley said. “I decided to go for my third degree… another four-year degree.
Wrestling has become more athlete-friendly. There’s a number of benefits, a number of amenities that we have access to now… didn’t have them before.”
WWE’s Alex Shelley Credits John Cena For Leading By Example
The video also featured Shelley talking about leadership and how he learned from leaders throughout his career, like CM Punk in the independent wrestling scene, Hiroshi Tanahashi in NJPW, and AJ Styles in TNA.
During his WWE run, Shelley cited John Cena as the leader of the company.
“I’ve been a part of WWE now for about a year and a half. John Cena was the leader. But I didn’t get a chance to work with him as much as I did the other three people I mentioned.
“That’s not to say that he doesn’t lead by example. You can look outside yourself. You can look to other people, see what they’ve done… Do you have to know them? Do you have to work alongside them? No. But that’s what leading by example is.
That’s why John Cena is the GOAT, man. Cause he works. And I’m very grateful for his contributions to the company I currently work for.”
