Why John Cena Will Probably Refuse To Win Final WWE Match
John Cena has wrestled in thousands of WWE matches.
He now has four appearances left before retiring, the next coming from his hometown of Boston, Massachusetts, on November 10.
While several names have emerged as potential candidates for Cena’s final match, discussions have also been held about whether or not he should win his final bout.
Traditionally, an outgoing wrestler is expected to put over an up-and-coming star, anointing them as the flagbearer of the promotion after they leave.
Natalya recently discussed John Cena’s retirement run on the Busted Open Podcast. When asked if the 48-year-old should win his final match, she claimed he would refuse if he had the choice.
So, knowing John Cena and the kind of person that he is, I think John would probably refuse to win. He’s ultimately about passing the torch. He’s always about giving back to the business. [14:55 onwards]
Meanwhile, some of the strong contenders to have emerged as Cena’s final opponents include Dominik Mysterio and Gunther. Natalya also suggested The Miz as his final rival.
John Cena Shuts Down Speculations About Future Return To WWE
“Never say never” is a common theme among wrestlers, especially when it comes to rejoining their former promotions.
Over the years, many wrestlers have either rejoined their earlier employers or returned for a retirement run or something spectacular.
However, John Cena claims that he’s not one of those people, as he reiterated his intentions about staying retired from wrestling after his final match on December 13, 2025.
The 17-time World Champion took to X to hit back at speculations about a future return to the Stamford promotion.
Despite any speculation or rumors, on July 6, 2024 I announced I would retire from WWE in-ring participation. I am far from perfect but strive to be a person whose word has value. 12/13/25 will be my final match. I am beyond grateful for every moment WWE has given me. I am excited for 12/13 & look forward to seeing all of you one last time.
