Ex-WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio had one of the most eventful and controversial tenures of the last decade. He made history as the first Mexican-born WWE Champion and won marquee matches like the Royal Rumble and Money in the Bank. But repeated off-screen controversies overshadowed Del Rio’s legacy.
He was first released by WWE in 2014 for “unprofessional conduct” following a backstage altercation with an employee. Although briefly brought back in 2015, he was released again within a year, as rumors swirled about ongoing behavioral issues backstage. Despite his in-ring success, his volatile behavior led to strained relationships with WWE management.
Alberto Del Rio’s AAA Run & Its Abrupt End
Post-WWE, Del Rio, wrestling under the name Alberto El Patron, became a marquee attraction for AAA. However, his stint in AAA was also marred by controversy. In March 2025, Del Rio received a six-month suspension in Tijuana after attacking a spectator during a match, following a heated exchange with the crowd.
Another incident saw him spark chaos on a national Mexican talk show, casting further doubts on his future with both AAA and WWE. Ultimately, his tumultuous behavior, coupled with AAA’s new WWE ownership, led to the end of his run at AAA in July 2025, leaving his wrestling future uncertain.
Since WWE acquired AAA, speculation has been running wild about whether the Stamford-based promotion will once again welcome back the Mexican star. According to reports, WWE has no such desire, but the legendary luchador’s remark could be a hint that something positive might be brewing for Alberto Del Rio.
