GUNTHER On Breaking Title Record – “Now We’ve Got To Do It”
GUNTHER wants to break records in WWE.
GUNTHER captured the Intercontinental Championship back on the June 10th, 2022 edition of SmackDown when he defeated Ricochet for the gold. Since then The Ring General has competed in critically acclaimed defences but has been one of the most title-holders in company history and now he’s on the verge of history.
Speaking to Inside The Ropes ahead of SummerSlam, GUNTHER noted that it was never in the cards for him to break records when he won the Intercontinental Title but now it’s so close, he thinks the company has to go through with it:
“Well, right now, it would be a shame if it didn’t go the distance, I’ve got to say that. When I won the title, it wasn’t like oh I’ve go to be the longest ever. But once we are that close now, it’s obviously something where now we’ve got to do it.”
When will GUNTHER become the longest-reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion?
GUNTHER now has the second-longest reigning Intercontinental Championship reign in company history after overtaking Randy Savage’s 414-day reign that ended in an all-time classic match with Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat at WrestleMania 3.
Should the Austrian star retain his title against Drew McIntyre at SummerSlam he will have to hold it for a further 38 days to overtake The Honky Tonk Man for the longest reign in history.
