Whether or not John Cena will retire with the Intercontinental Championship seems to be the question on everybody’s mind.

Cena won the IC title for the first time in his illustrious career by defeating Dominik Mysterion on Monday. He, thus, added his name to the list of the promotion’s Grand Slam Champions.

Meanwhile, a tournament to determine his final opponent, Last Time Is Now, is underway.

In the first round matches on RAW, Sheamus and Rusev won their respective bouts against Shinsuke Nakamura and Damian Priest, respectively.

Both the Irish powerhouse and the Bulgarian Brute have a storied history in WWE with John Cena.

On the latest episode of his podcast, Notsam Wrestling, Sam Roberts discussed the possibility of Sheamus dethroning Cena.

Obviously, you could have John Cena hold the Intercontinental title all the way till the end, and you could have him defend the Intercontinental title throughout. And so, that last match becomes John’s last match, and it’s for the Intercontinental title. And in that scenario, you could have somebody like Sheamus win the tournament, and then, thus, not only is he getting his match with John Cena, but he’s also getting that goal of winning the only title that he’s never won. The John Cena-Sheamus WWE Rivalry

John Cena and Sheamus have had an intense rivalry in WWE.

Around 2009, Cena was the top babyface, whereas the stage was being set for the Celtic Warrior to be one of the top heels.

In one of the most polarizing, yet short-lived feuds, fans witnessed intense battles and shocking title changes, as well as Sheamus’ meteoric rise.

Sheamus drew first blood by causing a huge upset at the 2009 Tables, Ladders & Chairs pay-per-view, defeating Cena for the WWE Championship in a Tables Match.

The two then had multiple singles matches, but none came close to the TLC event, as far as shock value is concerned.

Sheamus’ progress in the Last Time Is Now tournament definitely has the potential to change that.
