The John Report: WWE Smackdown Live Review 05/15/18

The show began with a shot of the big crowd in London. It was also mentioned that AJ Styles will face Shinsuke Nakamura later in the show. They showed images and some media outlets covering their last three matches as if to say they were classics even though most of us were disappointed by the booking in those matches. The winner of this match gets to pick the stipulation for the WWE Title match at Money in the Bank.
Let’s Hear From Daniel Bryan
Renee Young was in the ring and she introduced Daniel Bryan. Loud “yes” chants for Bryan, who ran out there with one of his t-shirts and his wrestling gear on underneath. Images were shown of Rusev beating Bryan last week in the Money in the Bank qualifying match. Why not video? Because WWE is weird about that.
Bryan has a cut on his nose. He has been wrestling during the European tour over the last week. There were loud “Daniel Bryan” chants as Renee tried to talk over the crowd. She stopped and let the crowd get it out of their system. Bryan told her to feel that energy leading to more “yes” chants. Bryan said he was disappointed about his loss last week and mentioned that nobody likes losing. Bryan said when he came back, he was happy to be back doing what he loved, but now it’s not enough to be back. Bryan said he doesn’t want to just be back. Bryan said he wants to be on top and he knows it will be a fight. Bryan said that before it’s all said and done, he will become the WWE Champion.
Big Cass showed up for the interruption. He was in his wrestling gear. I think fans chanted “you tapped out” at him. Cass said he’s sick of hearing Bryan running his mouth. Cass said that Bryan may have the people fooled, but he doesn’t have Cass fooled. Cass said he knows the real truth. Cass talked about how losing to Rusev wasn’t Bryan’s first major setback and Cass said he’s the reason that Bryan lost to Rusev. Cass said that he’s going to make sure that Bryan never achieves his dreams and aspirations in WWE ever again. Cass admitted that he lost at Backlash, but he didn’t tap out because he was in pain. Cass said he wanted to get out of the hold to beat up Bryan again and that’s what he did. Cass talked about how he would be following Bryan around. Fans chanted “Daniel Bryan” again. Cass spoke about Bryan lasting 75 minutes in the Greatest Royal Rumble match, but when Cass got in the ring, Cass eliminated Bryan and proved once again that Bryan is a loser. Cass talked about how the little person he beat up in Montreal took his beating with some dignity. Cass called Bryan a loser, he said he should have stayed retired and Bryan should be a stay at home father that should let Brie wear the pants in his family.
Cass stood on the apron while Bryan was in the ring. Cass went into the ring, Bryan punched him, Bryan with a dropkick to the left knee and kicks by Bryan while Cass was against the turnbuckle. Bryan stomped away on the left knee of Cass. Referees ran down to the ring, so Bryan left the ring and Bryan sent Cass’ left leg into the ring post two times in a row. Bryan went back in the ring with a shoulder to the back of the knee. Bryan slapped in a heel hook submission. Cass tapped out. Referees tried to get Bryan off him, so more refs and agents like Adam Pearce went down to ringside to break it up. The fans chanted “Daniel Bryan” while Cass limped away. Bryan led the crowd in “yes” chants.
Analysis: That was a pretty good opening segment with Bryan speaking with a lot of heart as the most likable guy on this show. Some of Cass’ promo was a little too repetitive to what he usually talks about, but he knows how to speak in a way that will make the people hate him. I was pleasantly surprised to see Bryan get the advantage during a brawl between them. Bryan targeted the left knee of Cass that Cass injured last year and missed about eight months of action. The crowd was into all of it. That was a rare opening segment that didn’t set up a match right away or for later in the show. It was a hot start to the show thanks to Bryan’s energy.

The Miz entered the arena to join the announce team of Tom Phillips, Corey Graves and Byron Saxton for this match.
The New Day trio made their entrance for this tag match against The Bar. That was followed by Sheamus and Cesaro aka The Bar making their entrance.
Money in the Bank Qualifying Match: The New Day – Big E and Xavier Woods (w/Kofi Kingston) vs. The Bar – Sheamus and Cesaro
The winning team will choose one member of their team to be a part of the Money in the Bank qualifying match.
Woods with a forearm to Cesaro followed by a somersault dive over the top onto Sheamus. Woods went back in the ring with a leaping kick on Cesaro for two. Sheamus tagged in while Cesaro held Woods and Sheamus hit a double axe off the ropes. Miz put over Cesaro for being so good and being underrated. Double team shoulder tackle from The Bar as the match went to break.

Back from break, Sheamus nailed Woods with a kick leading to Cesaro getting a pin for a two count. Cesaro charged at Woods, which led to Woods hitting a back body drop that sent Cesaro over the top to the floor. Big E got the hot tag against Sheamus. Big E with the two overhead belly to belly suplexes followed by the side belly to belly. Big E splash attempt, but Sheamus got the knees up to block it. Big E with a uranage slam out of the corner for two. Sheamus got a rollup on E for two. Cesaro tagged in back in and they hit a double team DDT on Big E for a two count. Cesaro tried the Sharpshooter, he had trouble getting to his feet and then he managed to do it even though Big E has huge legs. Woods back in the ring, but Sheamus brought Woods out of the ring. Woods shoved Sheamus into the ring post. Woods broke up the Sharpshooter. Big E elbow to Cesaro, Woods tagged in and hit a DDT off the ropes for a two count. Woods sent Cesaro into the ring post followed by a reverse sunset flip slam. Sheamus back in the ring to break up the pin, so Big E got back in and took out Sheamus with a running shoulder tackle while on the apron. That’s a spot that Big E loves to do where it causes both guys to land hard on the floor. Woods walked across the top rope and hit a flying elbow drop on Cesaro for the pinfall win after about 10 minutes.
Winners by pinfall: The New Day – Big E and Xavier Woods
Analysis: *** A fun tag team match as usual by these teams. The Sharpshooter spot was a bit of a mess because it was tough for Cesaro to turn Big E over, but I’m not going to be hard on them. It was a necessary spot because it led to Woods working hard to save his partner. New Day getting the win is fine because it leads to some intrigue about who they might choose to be in the MITB match. That’s something The Miz mentioned on commentary as a thing that could lead to problems for the New Day group.
The win by New Day means one member of the group will be in the men’s Money in the Bank ladder match.
Analysis: It was not announced on this show, but the belief is that it will be Big E and he’s going to a bit of a singles push after that. That’s a rumor that’s out there while Woods and Kingston will continue to work as a tag team. It doesn’t mean New Day is splitting up. We’ll see how it goes in the next few months.

The Bludgeon Brothers duo of Harper and Rowan did a promo trashing the other teams and images were shown of them. They smashed the camera with their hammers to end it.
Paige was in her office talking on her phone. Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville walked up to her. Mandy said that she beat Becky Lynch last week, so she’s in Money in the Bank and Paige said that it wasn’t a qualifying match. Paige informed them they are both facing Becky Lynch leading to Mandy and Sonya thinking it was a handicap match. Paige let them know it would be a triple threat match, so it’s every woman for herself. Mandy and Sonya left.
Analysis: I’m not surprised by WWE booking that match because they have done a lot of triple threats in the last few weeks including three of them on Raw.
AJ Styles, the WWE Champion, showed up for an interview conducted by Renee Young. The fans chanted “AJ Styles” as Styles talked about the winner of his match with Nakamura gets to pick the stipulation of the Money in the Bank match. Styles ran over some far out there stipulations that he mentioned as jokes including a “pole on a pole” match among them. Styles said he knows the international language of the forearm to face. Styles said it doesn’t matter if it’s at WrestleMania, Greatest Royal Rumble or here on Smackdown, Nakamura can’t beat him because it’s the house that AJ Styles built.
Analysis: The promo was fine, but Styles also didn’t really say anything. It was just a way to put over AJ’s confidence going into the match.
Andrade Almas and Zelina Vega are up next.

The duo of former NXT Champion Andrade “Cien” Almas and his business manager Zelina Vega made their entrance.
Analysis: They are heels in case you don’t know. He’s a very talented wrestler that had a five-star match with Johnny Gargano back at NXT Takeover in January and Vega has added a lot to his act.
Jake Constantino is the opponent and they said he’s from England.
Andrade “Cien” Almas (w/Zelina Vega) vs. Jake Constantino
Almas with a back elbow to the head. Constantino came back with a dropkick, but Almas stopped his momentum with a hard chop to the chest. Almas with the running double knee attack in the corner. Almas got the Hammerlock DDT for the pinfall win after just over one minute of action.
Winner by pinfall: Andrade Almas
Analysis: * Easy win to put over Almas in his Smackdown debut. There are a lot of DDT variation finishers in WWE these days.
Vega did a promo talking about how they were expecting more on Smackdown Live and all they got was that pathetic opponent. Vega said that it’s as pathetic as the guys in the locker room. Vega said that they came to Smackdown Live to take over.
Analysis: I hope Almas gets a good push very soon because he’s a talented guy that will fit in nicely as a top heel on Smackdown. Sometimes NXT talents get called up and get lost in the shuffle. I hope that doesn’t happen in this case because Almas with Vega is a polished act that could become a main eventer on Smackdown in a year or two.
Rusev and Aiden English were in a room that Aiden made for Rusev. English ripped on England. English told Rusev he had a new song picked out, he was going to sing it and Lana showed up to say that next week, she has a qualifying match for Money in the Bank against Billie Kay. Lana said she’s going to crush Billie Kay and Rusev will win as well, so they will be the first ever Mr. and Mrs. Money in the Bank. Rusev said together they will rule all of Smackdown Live. Aiden sang that it’s going to be on Rusev Day.
Analysis: It would be a surprise if Lana were to win MITB, but that promo was fine even though her accent seemed to go away during some of her promo. A few weeks ago, they had a segment where Lana hinted to Rusev that English was holding him back, but I guess that story has already been dropped.
The women’s triple threat is still to come: Lynch vs. Rose vs. Deville. Carmella’s celebration is up next.

Carmella’s “Royal Mellabration”
There was a town crier on the stage introducing “the very same princess who defeated Charlotte Flair twice to become the Smackdown Champion of all Women. God save the queen and may God save…Carmella.”
Carmella was joined by some Englishmen dressed in Beefeater costumes. Carmella danced on the stage in a nice outfit that wasn’t her ring gear, grabbed her Smackdown Women’s Title and walked down to the ring. The ring had a table in it with a pillow, so she put the title on the pillow. The red carpet was in the ring.
Carmella had a small crown on her head. Carmella told the crowd she wanted to give them the opportunity to show her how much they love her. Carmella gave them ten seconds to give her the praise she deserves. She asked for cheers and the fans booed, so Graves said the Brits have no class. Carmella ripped on them for standing outside of a hospital for a royal baby that hasn’t done squat, but they won’t show her respect? She makes a good point. Carmella said she wanted everybody to bow down before her.
Carmella said the fans remind her of the women on Smackdown because none of you think Carmella is good enough and they believe that she doesn’t deserve to be champion. Carmella said her “Mella is money” catchphrase and said that she’s the champion. Carmella told the fans that she is better than them while even doing it with a British accent. Carmella said she’s better than everyone while mentioning a lot of the women on the roster and even better than Trish Stratus and Lita combined. Carmella did not mention everybody. Paige made her entrance to a nice ovation.
Paige walked down to the ring to join the Mellabration. The fans were happy to see the British GM of Smackdown. Paige said that it’s great to be home in England. Fans chanted “welcome home” to Paige and “this is your house” as well. Paige said that we all heard Carmella say she’s better than everyone, but Paige has a royal proclamation of her own. Paige said she’s there to announce Carmella’s opponent at Money in the Bank. Carmella said she’s not defending that title at Money in the Bank. Paige said she is and it’s going to be against this woman…Asuka.
Asuka made her entrance to a good ovation. Asuka has been lost in the shuffle on Smackdown since WrestleMania, but now she’s getting a title shot after failing to beat Charlotte for the same title at WrestleMania.
Asuka got in the ring with Carmella for a staredown. Fans chanted “Asuka’s gonna kill you.” Carmella grabbed her title and left the ring. Asuka posed in the ring as her music played again. Carmella left with her title while complaining about having to defend the title against Asuka.
Analysis: The promo was okay. Some of Carmella’s schtick is annoying to the point that I want to turn it off, but she’s also being a heel and that’s her job. The match is fine with Asuka as the top contender again although it would have been nice if WWE attempted to have Asuka earn it. Why not do some number one contender’s match or something like that? They could have even done the traditional thing of having the champ Carmella get pinned by Asuka in a tag team match to set it up. I would be fine with that. It’s just weird when you have Paige name Asuka as the opponent without setting it up well. I’m leaning towards a Carmella win over Asuka as WWE tries to make Carmella into a legit star by beating Charlotte and then Asuka.
Shinsuke Nakamura was interviewed by Renee Young backstage. Nakamura did his act where he acted as if he didn’t know what words like “chance” and “possibility” mean. Nakamura said that Styles will lose while Styles will get a knee to face, then another knee to face and he kept going on about a knee to face. Nakamura said he’d win the match and then take his title.
Analysis: That was not a great promo. It was tough to understand the end of it. I like it better when he’s a jerk and does the “no speak English” reply.
It’s Lynch vs. Rose vs. Deville up next.

Becky Lynch was up first for the triple threat as the Irish Woman received a nice response from the European crowd.
Mandy Rose made her entrance, which is always nice to watch. It’s done in a way where the rest of the screen is zoomed out while the camera is focused on her. It’s a star entrance, that’s for sure. She looks amazing.
Sonya Deville made her entrance. This is the first time I’ve heard her solo entrance on the main roster. It’s very generic.
Money in the Bank Qualifier: Becky Lynch vs. Mandy Rose vs. Sonya Deville
The two Money in the Bank briefcases were above the ring. Lynch dumped Rose out of the ring. Lynch sent Deville into the turnbuckle followed by a jump kick to the ribs. Rose went back into the ring to work with Deville. The fans chanted for Becky as Deville hit a knee to the ribs for two. Rose got a rollup on Deville for two. Deville asked her what she was doing and it went to break there.

The match returned with Lynch making a comeback on Deville with a jumping kick followed by a kick to the ribs. Deville got back into it with a knee to the face. Rose tossed Deville out of the ring and covered Lynch for a two count. Lynch with a cradle on Rose for two. Rose whipped Lynch into the turnbuckle. Delayed double underhook suplex by Rose and Deville back in to toss Rose off of Lynch. Deville covered Lynch for two. Deville and Lynch exchanged punches. Rose got back into things by putting Deville on her shoulders and Lynch jumped off the turnbuckle with a missile dropkick on Rose that also took down Deville. That’s a nice alternative to the repetitive Tower of Doom spot out of the corner. Lynch covered Rose for two. Rose went for her suplex again, but Lynch fought out of it and Deville hit each woman with running kicks. Deville with a running knee on Lynch for two. Rose got back into it with a knee attempt on Lynch, but Lynch moved and Rose hit Deville with the knee. That led to Deville bumping to the floor. Rose rolled up Lynch, which Lynch kicked out of and Lynch slapped on the Disarmer submission. Rose tapped out to give Lynch the win after about eight minutes.
Winner by submission: Becky Lynch
The win by Lynch means she is in the women’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match joining Charlotte Flair, Ember Moon and Alexa Bliss. Four more women will be in the match.
Analysis: **1/2 It was good for the time given with Lynch getting a much-needed win since she has been putting people over a lot this year including Rose last week. I thought that Rose and Deville should have worked together more than they did to try to tell the story that it was more of an uphill battle for Lynch. It was well done, though. The crowd was strongly behind Lynch while Rose and Deville each got a decent amount of offense in. I think Lynch has a solid chance to win the women’s Money in the Bank match although we still need to see who else is in the match. Putting Lynch over in that match would be a good way to continue her positive momentum as one of the most likable women on the roster.

Next week: Samoa Joe vs. Big Cass in a Money in the Bank qualifying match. Also, Billie Kay vs. Lana in a MITB qualifying match.
Samoa Joe did a cell phone promo about how Cass was a fake tough guy. Joe said that men like Cass always end up coming up short in a big match. Joe talked about how Cass is now his target and Joe’s mission is to get that title opportunity that is rightfully is. Joe said that Cass is only an obstacle and one that Joe will put to sleep.
Analysis: I think Joe will win that match because Big Cass vs. Daniel Bryan seems likely for the MITB PPV. Joe could win the MITB as well since the MITB contract is more interesting when a heel like Joe has it.
The Iiconics duo of Billie Kay and Peyton Royce did a cell phone promo. They called Lana a loser and Billie a winner. They said the future would be iconic.
Analysis: I’m leaning towards a Lana win over Billie next week just because it would be a bit of a shock. It’s also weird since it’s heel vs. heel although Lana could easily work as a face because the fans like her. It’s an odd match to book since Royce didn’t make MITB, so why would Kay be in it? That’s why I’m going Lana. Maybe I’m overthinking it.
Shinsuke Nakamura made his entrance. I am still loving his heel entrance song. It’s Styles vs. Nakamura for the WWE Title at Money in the Bank.
AJ Styles, the WWE Champion, got a big ovation for his entrance as usual. The announcers kept calling it a WrestleMania caliber match all show long and they said it again as the match was about to begin…after a break.

The bell rang after the break. It’s the first Styles vs. Nakamura match on Smackdown.
AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
This match is not for AJ’s WWE Championship. The winner of the match gets to pick the stipulation for their WWE Championship match at Money in the Bank.
They did some mat wrestling to start as Phillips claimed they “headlined” WrestleMania last month. Actually, they were a match on the show and not the main event, but it’s WWE where they like to claim several matches are the main event. Styles took over thanks to a dropkick. Styles worked over Nakamura against the turnbuckle. Nakamura bailed to the floor, so Styles jumped over the top rope and nailed Nakamura with a forearm to the face. Styles went for a running attack on the apron, but Nakamura countered with a kick to the ribs. Running knee to the ribs by Nakamura. Back in the ring, Nakamura covered for two as the show went to break.

The match returned with Nakamura remaining in control with a hard kick that sent Styles into the ropes. Nakamura stomped on Styles in the corner. Nakamura wanted an Exploder Suplex, Styles elbowed his way out of it and Nakamura came back with a jumping kick to the face. Nakamura grounded Styles with a Dragon Sleeper submission. Nakamura yelled at the ref to ask him, so Styles got out of the hold with a knee to the face. Nakamura came back with punches. Styles escaped Nakamura’s offense by the turnbuckle and Styles hit a Pele Kick to knock Nakamura off the turnbuckle. Both guys were down. Styles hit a clothesline followed by a running forearm. Styles with another forearm on Nakamura against the turnbuckle. Styles picked up Nakamura and slammed him face first into the mat. Styles went for a Calf Crusher, Nakamura got out of it, Nakamura went for the Kinshasa, Styles avoided it and Nakamura hit a spinning kick. Nakamura put Styles on his shoulders and hit a sitout slam. That sequence was excellent. Fans chanted “this is awesome” for them. Nakamura went for a knee on the top turnbuckle, but Styles avoided it. Styles went for a springboard attack, Nakamura kicked him down and Nakamura nailed another knee to the ribs to knock Styles down on the apron. They battled for a suplex while on the apron. Nakamura fought out of it, kick to the face and Nakamura jumped off the turnbuckle with a knee to the ribs. Nakamura dragged Styles into the ring for a two count.
Nakamura charged in for a Kinshasa, Styles avoided it and wanted the Styles Clash, but Nakamura kicked his way out of it. Styles nailed the Ushigoroshi (fireman’s carry into a neckbreaker) and some fans chanted “this is awesome” again. It wasn’t a lot of them. Styles went for a forearm to the face, but Nakamura got his knee up to hit Styles in the face. Nakamura with a running knee that got a two count. It was not a full Kinshasa like he usually does it. Nakamura charged in and was met with a spin kick by Styles. Styles went up top, the referee was behind Styles, so when Styles jumped, Nakamura moved and Styles stopped himself before hitting the referee. Back elbow by Styles on Nakamura. The ref turned around and Nakamura faked like he got hit with a low blow. The ref admonished Styles, who told him he didn’t do that. Fans booed Nakamura’s actions. Nakamura recovered with a forearm to the back of the head and a reverse Exploder Suplex. Nakamura hit the Kinshasa knee to the face for the pinfall win after 18 minutes.
Winner by pinfall: Shinsuke Nakamura
The win by Nakamura means he gets to pick the stipulation for their WWE Championship match at Money in the Bank on June 17.
Analysis: ***3/4 That was a great match in front of an appreciative crowd that was into most of it and probably could have been louder. They were probably tired after two nights of WWE action. The counter wrestling was impressive because they know eachother so well and they are building off the other matches by doing clever counters to the spots that usually work for them. It was a competitive match that was better than the other three televised matches they have had in WWE. It’s nice to see them get nearly 20 minutes in a match while also doing a finish that was relatively clean other than Nakamura’s cheap tactics, which are fine for him as a heel. This wasn’t a classic match, but if their next match goes another ten minutes that’s going to give them a chance to have one of the better matches of the year. The only thing I don’t like about this is Styles losing clean as the WWE Champion. I know it was done to set up the stipulation for the next match and to show that Nakamura can pin him (after four tries), but it bothers me when a champion has to lose non-title to put over the same guy that he is wrestling at the next PPV. It’s a minor gripe, I guess.
Nakamura celebrated the victory. Replays aired of the finish with Nakamura faking the low blow, which played into the rivalry, and capitalized with an Exploder Suplex leading to the Kinshasa for the win.
Nakamura stood over a fallen Styles and held his head while talking trash to him. Nakamura left the ring as the winner and that was the end of Smackdown.
Analysis: They are saving the stipulation announcement for next week, which is fine with me. There’s no reason to rush it. I’m not sure what it will be, but I thought after the last match they might go with a Last Man Standing match. A Street Fight is possible. There are a lot of things that are possible, really. Your guess is as good as mine at this point.
I don’t know if Nakamura will win the WWE Title from Styles. I thought Nakamura would win at WrestleMania. He failed, so they turned him heel. When that happened, I figured he would win the rematch and that didn’t happen. Here we are heading into their fourth WWE Title match at MITB and fifth match on TV after this win by Nakamura. It would make sense for Nakamura to get the title because that would justify the heel turn, but having Styles win to avenge this loss fits the story too. It could really go either way. What I’m hoping for is that their MITB match will go 25 to 30 minutes and that we’ll be talking about it as one of the best matches of the year. The other matches they have had have all been around the three-star level and this one was close to four stars. I want to see them get to that next level because I know they can do it.

Final Thoughts
It gets a 7 out of 10.
I enjoyed Smackdown just like last week. The main event got a lot of time and it was a big win for Nakamura. I thought New Day vs. Cesaro/Sheamus was pretty good for ten minutes while Becky Lynch’s win was nice to see because she needed that. The Almas debut was okay. It was just a quickie to try to introduce him to the fans that don’t watch NXT even though they should.
In terms of promos, I liked what Bryan had to say and Big Cass was fine in his obnoxious heel comeback. Bryan getting revenge on Cass was necessary for their storyline. The Carmella promo wasn’t as entertaining, but at least she is getting consistent promo time.
The London crowd was more into Raw even though Smackdown was the better show. Part of it is because Daniel Bryan was on early and if he was the main event then they would have been louder because of him.

Women’s Money in the Bank Match: Ember Moon (Raw) vs. Alexa Bliss (Raw) vs. Charlotte Flair (SD) vs. Becky Lynch (SD) vs. two more women from Raw and two more women from Smackdown.
Smackdown Women’s Championship: Carmella vs. Asuka
I assume Roman Reigns vs. Jinder Mahal will be added as well as Sami Zayn vs. Bobby Lashley from the Raw side. Daniel Bryan vs. Big Cass is likely assuming Cass loses to Joe in the MITB qualifier.
There are rumors that there might be a Tag Team Money in the Bank match as well, but it’s still not confirmed yet. That’s all we know for now.
