TJR: Preview and Predictions for AEW Dynamite Tonight (Oct. 2)

TJR Wrestling

This is a huge week for pro wrestling and I thought it would be a good idea to write out some predictions based on what is advertised for AEW Dynamite tonight. I did it for Raw, it did pretty good in terms of numbers, so I want to do it for AEW and Smackdown too. This isn’t going to be some formal column or something that is too wordy. It’s more of a point form, blog style article.

Tonight’s AEW Dynamite episode takes place at the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC.

Cody vs. Sammy Guevara

This will be the first match of the show. It’s a good idea since Cody is one of the biggest stars in AEW, so the crowd will be hot for it. This is also a big match or Sammy because he’s a young guy with a bright future. Cody has said that if he loses then Guevara will take his spot in the Full Gear main event for the AEW World Title against Chris Jericho. I would be shocked if Cody lost this match. I think Cody will win a competitive match that gets around 12 minutes.

MJF vs. Brandon Cutler

When talking about bright young stars, MJF is the first name that should come to mind in AEW. MJF is 23 years old and is already very good at being a heel. As the years go by, he’ll get even better as a heel while his matches should improve too. I don’t know much about Cutler other than he’s close to the Young Bucks and helped with their Being the Elite show. He’s also got a good look to him. This should be a win for MJF. Let’s say seven minutes or so.

For the Women’s Championship: Riho vs. Nyla Rose

They are not that well known to most wrestling fans, but if you watched AEW’s shows earlier this year, both women have been booked well to earn their spot in this match. Rose is more of a heel although they haven’t really established her as a strong heel. It’s just the obvious route since Rose is a lot bigger. I like Riho a lot as an underdog babyface. Long term, I can see them building up Britt Baker as a future title holder, so I think it makes more sense for Rose to win here. It could go either way. Let’s say they get around 12 minutes.

“Hangman” Adam Page vs. Pac

It was a match that was originally scheduled for the Double or Nothing pay-per-view in May. That didn’t happen due to a contractual issue for Pac, so they had a match at an indy show and did a worked leg injury for Page when Pac wouldn’t stop attacking him. At the All out PPV in August, Pac beat Kenny Omega while Page lost to Chris Jericho, so is it going to be about Pac continuing his positive momentum or Page gets going again? I’m leaning towards a possible cheap ending like a DQ and maybe they build to a Full Gear PPV on November 9. If not that, then I’ll go with Pac winning a match that gets around 14 minutes.

Jon Moxley will make an appearance

It will likely be a promo to further his feud with Kenny Omega since they have a match at the Full Gear PPV on November 9. Another option is to have somebody come out to try to shut up Moxley, then Moxley beats them up and maybe wins a short match. I’m looking forward to hearing from Moxley, who is a great talker when given the opportunity.

The Young Bucks (Matt and Nick Jackson) and Kenny Omega vs. Chris Jericho, Santana and Ortiz

This is the main event and I expect it to be a long match around 18-20 minutes. There are so many ways it can go. With Jericho as the AEW Champion, it’s possible that he’ll get pinned by Omega to try to build Kenny up some more. I’m intrigued by how Kenny is being booked because he’s been showing heel tendencies. My guess is that AEW wants Santana and Ortiz to have a strong start as a tag team, so I expect one of them to get the pinfall win over one of the Young Bucks, so let’s say Ortiz pins Matt. I think it’s going to be an awesome match.

Other Notes

* The announce team will be Tony Schiavone, Jim Ross and Excalibur. I assume Schiavone will be in the play-by-play role while the other two will be analysts.

* There will be a six-man tag team match with So Cal Uncensored vs. Luchasaurus, Jungle Boy & Marko Stunt, which is a rematch from the All Out PPV in August. That match is not scheduled to air on television and it would just be for the fans in Washington. The match will be taped. AEW could post it on Youtube, B/R Live or something else in the future.

Final Thoughts

I am very interested to see how the debut of AEW Dynamite goes tonight. I want to see if they do a better job with match times because during previous AEW events, some matches went on too long and they hurt the match. Tonight, I hope they realize it’s okay to have a match go only five minutes (like MJF’s win) and you don’t need everybody going 15 minutes just so they can hit all of their big moves. The timing of matches is so important.

It will also be interesting to see how they utilize other members of the roster that aren’t in advertised matches. Will they add more matches? Probably not because five matches in a two hours show is a lot. I just want to see if there’s involvement among the other wrestlers.

There was a report from Dave Meltzer last week that said AEW had some major angles planned. It’s hard to guess who or what those will be, but I’m all for something big to happen and that it gets people talking in a positive light.

My review of AEW Dynamite will likely be posted later tonight TJRWrestling since I’ll be able to watch it on TSN2 here in Canada. I don’t think it will be live, but I expect to have it posted before midnight. I have a funeral that is going to take up much of the day tomorrow, so I need to make sure I get this done tonight.
