Tony Khan Says CM Punk Firing “The Right Move”

Tony Khan in AEW

Tony Khan has opened up on firing CM Punk, claiming it was “the right move.”

On September 2nd, AEW made the announcement that Punk had been “terminated for cause with immediate effect.” This came after an investigation into a backstage altercation with Jack Perry during All In.

Khan himself was also involved in the incident, with Punk said to have “lunged” at his boss, leaving him fearing for his security and even his life as a result.

Tony Khan thanks CM Punk, but still believes firing him was the right decision

During the post-All Out media scrum, the AEW President thanked Punk for his work as a wrestler in the company and admitted that letting him go wasn’t an easy decision for the disciplinary committee or himself.

“I don’t want to discuss the terms of the separation in that sense. I very much want to thank CM Punk, Phil, for everything he did in AEW as a wrestler.

“I don’t think it was an easy decision for anybody on the discipline committee or the outside counsel or for me to do something like that.”

Despite the difficulty, Khan believes it was the right move to make.

“I do think it was the right move. As far as what’s going to happen in the future, I can’t speak to that. I’m not the attorneys who interpret all that language.”

There has been a mixed reaction to Punk’s departure in the AEW locker room, however, one star, Andrade El Idolo, has publicly paid tribute to the Second City Saint.
