Sami Zayn Deepens WWE’s Injury Worries
Sami Zayn could be heading for a spell on the sidelines.
Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens are the current WWE Tag Team Champions but missed the chance to defend them at SummerSlam with Owens suffering from an injury. Owens was taken out by The Judgment Day in recent weeks to cover for his condition but is believed to have been suffering “for a while.”
On Raw in Minneapolis, Sami Zayn was due to join Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins in the main event to take on Finn Balor, Damian Priest, and Dirty Dominik Mysterio but JD McDonagh – who had interfered in Judgment Day business earlier in the night – had other ideas as he ambushed Zayn backstage taking him out of the match.
Now it seems there may be more to why Zayn was attacked and had to miss the match with Bryan Alvarez and Dave Meltzer noting that he is currently injured on Wrestling Observer Radio.
Meltzer noted the attack by McDonagh was “A cover for a bursa sac injury” before Alvarez expanded on what he noticed during the attack:
“[Zayn’s] holding his elbow when they did the beat down. So I mean, he ran near at the beginning, I guess I’d have to go back and look at his elbow here in the beginning segment, which, you know, I didn’t do at the time, but man, that thing looked disgusting. Guess we’ll see how long he’s out of action for.”
The discussion then turned to what might happen with the WWE Tag Team Championship should both Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn have to miss an extended period with Alvarez noting that Zayn was brawling earlier in the night on Raw so could possibly still compete in the ring if WWE had to get the titles off them:
“I mean, Sami was brawling here, so like, if there’s an issue, I think that he could probably do a match to drop the titles. But to me, it’s like you spent all that time and you did that huge match at WrestleMania. I mean, I think they should do whatever they can to not strip them of the titles unless they absolutely have to.”
Who has Sami Zayn joined on WWE’s injured list?
As well as Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens, Sonya Deville has suffered a serious knee injury that could see her out of action for several months which will likely lead to WWE having to make a major change with the Women’s Tag Team Title.
Roman Reigns was reported to have “got hurt” during his SummerSlam main event with Jey Uso but the WWE Universal Champion is scheduled to be part of a “Hail to the Chief” celebration on SmackDown.
Liv Morgan, Braun Strowman, Randy Orton, and Big E all remain out of action due to injuries with the New Day star contemplating if he’ll ever be able to return to the ring.
