Kurt Angle Looking For Footage Of Lost Match With Owen Hart
Kurt Angle is seeking footage of a match with Owen Hart.
After winning gold at the Atlanta Olympics, Kurt Angle dipped his toes into the world of professional wrestling, but quickly decided that it wasn’t for him. During this period, he famously walked out of ECW High Incident and turned down an offer from WWE.
However, fast forward two years, and Angle realised his earlier views on pro wrestling were “stupid” and reached a developmental deal with WWE.
Angle threw himself into training with his typical ferocious determination and quickly impressed his coaches. It’s been widely claimed in the years since that the star picked up pro wrestling quicker than arguably anyone else in history.
This training included wrestling for WWE’s developmental promotions, as well as competing in dark matches at TV tapings. Including wrestling the late, great Owen Hart in just his 27th bout.
In a post on social media, Angle has now appealed for anyone with footage of that match in May 1999 to come forward.
“In 1999, I had the privilege of wrestling the legendary Owen Hart in a dark match in the WWE 5 days before his unfortunate death,” Angle wrote. “Til this day, I haven’t seen any video footage of it. If anyone has ever seen the footage of my match with Owen, message me in the comments below. Someone had to record it. #itstrue”
The dark match was never intended to be broadcast and served as a try-out of sorts for Angle to assess his readiness for the main roster. Angle reportedly impressed opposite the beloved veteran and made his official debut at Survivor Series that November.
Although Angle suggests his match with Hart took place on May 17, Cagematch and other records indicate that the match may have in fact taken place on May 10 ahead of a taping for Shotgun Saturday Night. Hart sadly passed away at Over The Edge on May 23.
Kurt Angle To Partner With Hulk Hogan And Eric Bischoff
It’s been announced that Kurt Angle will work as a commentator for Real American Freestyle Wrestling. The new wrestling promotion was launched by Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff back in May.
In a press release confirming the news, Angle said he’s delighted to be involved, given his extensive background in freestyle wrestling. He added that he’s excited to bring freestyle wrestling to audiences around the world.
The promotion is set to host its first-ever event on August 30.
