Goldberg “P*ssed” At WWE’s Handling Of Retirement Match
Goldberg wanted more from his WWE goodbye.
At Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12, Goldberg wrestled his 283rd and final match against Gunther.
Despite doing his best to roll back the years, he was ultimately defeated by the World Heavyweight Champion and went out as wrestling tradition dictates, on his back.
In the minutes after the loss, the WWE Hall of Famer addressed the crowd in Atlanta, but things quickly went off the rails. Just after he started speaking, the broadcast ended, meaning his goodbye wasn’t seen by viewers at home.
Goldberg Wanted More From Retirement
Unsurprisingly, Goldberg wasn’t impressed by the broadcast cutting off the majority of his retirement speech. During an interview with Ariel Helwani, he said he would have liked more time and space to put something together.
“I mean, the Saturday night’s Main Event and live TV in Atlanta. I mean, you always have your dreams of how you’re going to do things, and ultimately to have a little bit more control over the time and the space would have been much more preferred. Let’s just put it that way…
I mean, I can’t say that I was too thrilled about part of that… Freaking 20 seconds with the microphone in my hand, for God’s sakes.”
Although he reiterated that he was grateful to be given the chance to have a retirement match, he admitted he felt a little let down. He described his run as “a little less than desired” before suggesting that WWE didn’t put in the same amount of effort as he did.
“The entire rundown, from the inception of the idea to its delivery. It was a little less than to be desired, but for the again, I’m not going to complain, because nobody, not many people, get that opportunity… I get two weeks, man, I get two weeks before I can really, you know, spill the beans and, you know, make my feelings kind of known about the entire rundown.
Let’s just say I’m p*ssed off at the way I went out. I put so much into it and I don’t feel as though the effort was reciprocated to put a stamp on what I’ve accomplished. I think it could have been done a little bit differently. That’s all. I’m happy with my performance. I’m happy with the setting, you know, but could it have been better? Absolutely. It can always be better.”
During the post-show press conference, Triple H said that he expects Goldberg’s son to follow in his footsteps, commenting that he’s seen the “sparkle” in his eyes. For his part, Gage has previously admitted that he’d love to work for WWE if he fails to land a spot in the NFL.
