WWE News: Rey Mysterio Staying With WWE, Dominik Mysterio’s Future
The WWE future of Rey Mysterio has been in the news of late because the 45-year-old wrestling legend was working without a contract after his most recent WWE deal expired a few months ago. Mysterio had an agreement to work for WWE for 18 months, which also saw Rey’s son Dominick appearing on screen with his father last year against Brock Lesnar and now with Rey’s feud with Seth Rollins.
It appears as though Mysterio is staying in WWE, according to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Dave Meltzer wrote that Rey’s deal with WWE is “as close to official without confirmation of it being official, and obviously Dominik is a big part of that deal.” It was also noted by Meltzer that All Elite Wrestling made Rey an offer similar to the WWE deal, but the WWE deal was higher because it had more dates on it. As for the length of the deal, Meltzer said that the deal is longer than the previous 18 month deal, but not as long as some of the 5-year deals that WWE has signed wrestlers to in the last few years. If we had to guess, something around two or three years seems likely.
Rey started with WWE in 2002, became a World Champion and one of the most popular wrestlers ever and then his contract expired in 2015, which allowed him to move on after 13 years in WWE. Prior to that, Mysterio worked for WCW, ECW, various promotions in Mexico and elsewhere. Post WWE, Mysterio worked elsewhere for a few years, then returned in January 2018 and looked as good as ever after getting treatment on his bad knees. That’s when he agreed to that 18-month deal.
Dominik Mysterio, who is 23 years old, is wrestling Seth Rollins at SummerSlam on August 23 in what will be Dominik’s first official match in WWE. Rey has been off WWE TV since Extreme Rules last month when he lost an “Eye for an Eye Match” with Rollins that saw Seth “pop” Rey’s eye out.
Dominik has been training to wrestle for a few years, including some time spent at Lance Storm’s school in Calgary when Storm still had the school (Lance recently closed it). It’s not known if Dominik has a WWE contract now or what that deal is, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see more Dominik Mysterio matches in WWE past SummerSlam.
TJR Thoughts: I’m glad Rey is staying where he is. I have enjoyed his run over the last two years and he looks a lot younger than he is even with the bad knees. I know he’s done a lot of treatments on the knees and you can tell it’s worked for him. Dominik has looked good in what he’s done so far. I look forward to seeing more from them including some tag team matches for father and son as a team. That will be cool to see them win the tag team titles.
