WWE Shares Special Backstage Video As AJ Styles Says Goodbye To Japan

The WWE Hall Of Famer's Finisher AJ Styles Admitted He Would Never Take

AJ Styles has opened up about the importance of his time in Japan.

In the lead-up to WWE’s two-date stop in Japan, AJ Styles announced that it would likely be his last time wrestling in the country before he retires. During that same interview, Styles said he plans to retire in 2026 after one more match at WrestleMania.

It’s believed that Styles’ current contract runs until February, and he confirmed that he doesn’t have a retirement date in mind. However, he suggested that he will remain with WWE when he hangs up his boots to work as a trainer or coach.

The news came as John Cena continues his march towards retirement on December 13.

AJ Styles Reflects On Importance Of His NJPW Run

With WWE now back in the United States, the company has released a video which follows Styles backstage in Japan. In the clip, he discussed the importance of his run with NJPW immediately before signing with WWE, admitting that his move to the sports entertainment giant would likely have never happened without it.

“I felt so much love here in Japan for everything that I’ve done here. I don’t know where or would’ve even been in WWE if it wasn’t for Japan. So just as long as they know that I appreciate them as much as they appreciate me, if not more.”

The video also shows footage from the end of the show where CM Punk brought Styles back to the ring. Styles then handed Shinsuke Nakamura a note in Japanese for him to read to the crowd, thanking them for their support.

“Everyone, as you all know, when I first came to Japan, to be honest, I didn’t know what people expected from me or if someone like me would even be accepted here. But from the very first day, you welcomed me with respect and passion. Every time I passed through the curtain to the ring in Japan, I gave everything I had because I felt you all were worthy of it.

In return, you gave me something I will never forget: trust, energy, and love for professional wrestling. Maybe one day I’ll leave this ring, but a part of my heart will always remain here, in the hearts of the Japanese people and in each and every one of you. Thank you.”

Following those two shows, Shinsuke Nakamura admitted that he’s also closing on retirement. He said that with Styles and John Cena confirming their retirements, it’s shown him that the end of his own in-ring career is on the horizon. Regardless, he vowed to keep fighting and giving his all until that day comes.
