WWE Star Vows To Start Over With CM Punk
A big-name WWE superstar has commented on his complicated relationship with CM Punk and where they are now.
CM Punk returned to WWE last November at Survivor Series and received a hero’s welcome from his hometown crowd in Chicago. While a lot of WWE fans were happy to see Punk back “home” in the company where he became a major star, there were questions about how WWE superstars felt about it.
Many wrestlers on the current WWE roster were not even in WWE when Punk left in January 2014. Some of them were, but a lot of them have become stars in the near-decade when Punk was gone.
Sami Zayn is a former WWE Tag Team Champion who is the current Intercontinental Champion. Zayn didn’t interact with Punk in Punk’s first run in the company because Zayn was just starting on the NXT brand around that time. However, Zayn and Punk both spent a lot of years in the indies while Punk had issues in AEW with wrestlers that Zayn is friends with.
Kevin Owens has been Sami Zayn’s best friend for over two decades and Owens made it clear earlier this month that “we’re not each other’s type of people” when it comes to CM Punk, but they’re fine and get along well enough. Owens is close friends with The Young Bucks, who had the infamous backstage fight with CM Punk in September 2022 in AEW and never worked with Punk again after that.
As for Sami Zayn, he talked to Gorilla Position about CM Punk saying they cleared the air with each other.
“I’ve known him for a very long time. There’s been some ups, there’s been some downs. He showed up and I was like, ‘I just don’t want this to be weird. Say whatever you need to say.’ He said his piece, I said my piece. Clean slate. That’s it.”
“You just can’t walk around harboring resentment. I just don’t want him to walk by and be like a black cloud. I work here, and vice versa. I don’t want him to see me and [groans]. Whatever happened, cards on the table, clean slate. Good? Good. Okay. That’s just it. That’s how I approach, not just him, but life. I’ve found in my experience that it’s kind of exhausting to hate people. The only person who is mad is you. They’re just walking around, and you’re under a cloud of negativity. I just don’t want that cloud.”
Sami Zayn Admits There Was “Weird Stuff” With CM Punk In The Past
The comments from Zayn continued as the Intercontinental Champion admitted that he has moved past his issues with CM Punk and it’s a clean slate for them now.
“Has there been some weird stuff between us in the past? Sure, I think 90% of people you ask about Punk would say the same. As far as I’m concerned, we have to work together, you’re here, you’ve been through a lot in your life, let’s just clean slate and start over. That’s it.”
CM Punk is still out of action after suffering a torn triceps at January’s Royal Rumble. After the WWE Draft, Punk had a positive update for the fans claiming he would be returning to the ring soon although he did not provide a timeline.
