First WWE NXT Women’s North American Champion Crowned At Battleground
A Ladder Match took place at the Battleground PLE to determine the first-ever NXT Women’s North American Champion.
For the women of NXT, there was only one championship up for grabs for the entire division. There used to be the NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions, but those were discontinued in June 2023. That meant that the only title available for women on the brand was the main NXT Women’s Championship.
Shawn Michaels is a two-time WWE Hall of Famer who is also the Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative in WWE while also having the role of booker aka the man who makes the decisions on the NXT brand. Recently, Michaels explained why he felt that NXT needed another women’s championship.
“Our roster is so stacked on the female side, it just seems like the right thing to do. Again, we’ve got a North American Men’s Championship. [We] Ought to have the North American Women’s [Championship] on the other side.”
“Again, this is certainly a division that can easily handle it. So look, it was one of those things that you see the writing on the wall. I don’t want to oversimplify it because it’s not the easiest thing in the world, coming up with a two-hour, 52-week-a-year live wrestling show every week. But I know what I like as a fan.”
“I know that the NXT women’s division is unbelievably stacked, and they can easily handle a Women’s North American Champion Title. So it was a decision that needed to be made, we made it, and looking forward to crowning that inaugural champion on June 9.”
The six women going into the Ladder Match at Battleground were determined by a combine for the entire women’s division. The twelve women who did the best in the combine were put in six qualifying matches. The winners of those six qualifiers were Sol Ruca, Lash Legend, Jaida Parker, Fallon Henley, Kelani Jordan and Michin.
New WWE NXT Women’s North American Champion At Battleground
The UFC Apex in Las Vegas was the host venue for the NXT Battleground PLE. It was the first time WWE used the UFC Apex for one of their shows.
In the six-woman ladder match, Kelani Jordan emerged as the winner to become the first ever WWE NXT Women’s North American Champion. It is Jordan’s first championship in her WWE NXT career.
NXT’s boss Shawn Michaels congratulated Jordan on her win while also posting a photo with her.
First-ever.
