Vince McMahon Pitted Current WWE Star Against Stephanie McMahon
Vince McMahon seemed to know how to get the best out of anyone.
Paul Heyman was recently the guest on Stephanie McMahon’s What’s Your Story? With Steph McMahon podcast, where he shared a story about Vince wanting to put his daughter through a test.
Heyman joined the Stamford promotion in 2001 after ECW closed shop. At the time, Heyman was also one of Vince’s closest competitors, only behind Eric Bischoff.
While being an on-screen character, Stephanie was also contributing ideas backstage. But according to Heyman, Vince McMahon wanted her to be challenged.
Vince McMahon Challenged His Daughter Through Paul Heyman
Paul Heyman spoke about how, as the owner of Extreme Championship Wrestling, he was used to calling the shots, but in WWE, he was forced to adjust to a new role.
He revealed that Vince McMahon pitted him against Stephanie in order to make her more confident in her decisions.
We were pitted against each other. Oh, of course, of course, we were, we were absolutely. Well, you know, first of all, I just had spent seven and a half years of my life being God of my own universe. I was the end-all be-all…Now, I come aboard and I’m working for other people, and there’s an approval process where, number one, I was the approval process, and now I’m one of many pitching.
The 60-year-old said that Vince approached him to be the disruptor and challenge Stephanie while she served in her role as the head of the writing team.
So when I came aboard, I was told, “My daughter runs the writing team. Take her out of her game. I want you to be the disruptor in the room. I want you to be the contrarian opinion. Do not make that easier. There’s no nepotism here. She earns that right to manage you, or she doesn’t get to do it.
Heyman then revealed that Stephanie McMahon was also assigned a similar task to challenge him.
