Paul Heyman Didn’t Get Along With Vince McMahon’s Closest Advisor
Paul Heyman and Vince McMahon’s closest advisor, Kevin Dunn, never got along.
Heyman was McMahon’s trusted creative genius, known for pushing bold ideas and managing top stars. Their relationship was built on creativity, respect for wrestling innovation, and sometimes challenging the status quo.
On the other hand, Dunn was McMahon’s longtime production right-hand man, deeply embedded in WWE’s TV direction and production since the 1980s. His bond with McMahon focused on controlling the broadcast style and execution, ensuring McMahon’s vision was perfectly delivered on screen. He was seen as a protector of McMahon’s traditional wrestling product.
Despite both being professionally close to McMahon, Kevin Dunn and Paul Heyman never got along with each other. It is said that this difference stemmed from personality differences and creative disagreements. Heyman’s creative, sometimes rebellious style clashed with Dunn’s gatekeeper mentality. This led to tension, making their working relationship far from friendly despite their mutual respect for Vince McMahon.
Paul Heyman And Kevin Had A Bad Working Relationship
Speaking on Stephanie McMahon’s What’s Your Story? Podcast Paul Heyman confirmed that there was indeed tension between him and Kevin Dunn, which McMahon affirmed.
Paul Heyman: For me to quote Kevin Dunn, who I, legendarily, did not get along with, and Steph will tell you.
McMahon: I know. (From 27:17)
Kevin Dunn left WWE in late December 2023, officially retiring after nearly 40 years with the company. Internal changes following WWE’s merger with Endeavor and new leadership shifts that reduced Vince McMahon’s control significantly influenced his departure. He reportedly disagreed with the new direction and was unwilling to adapt to the production changes demanded by the new owners.
Meanwhile, Paul Heyman continues his journey in WWE, where he serves as the manager of The Vision (Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed) and, now, seemingly, Logan Paul too. The Maverick recently joined The Brons in their rivalry against CM Punk and others.
