The Undertaker Recalls Talk With Vince McMahon Prior to Vince’s “Retirement”

The Undertaker meeting with Vince McMahon backstage

The Undertaker has been sharing details on a phone call with Vince McMahon the day before leaving WWE, but felt “there was no way” his former boss would leave WWE for good.

Receiving a phone call from Vince McMahon usually meant The Undertaker would be hearing news on a new opponent.

But on this occasion, it was the biggest news in modern day WWE history, as McMahon phoned to inform The Dead Man that he was leaving the company.

Since his last match in WWE, a Boneyard Match at WrestleMania 36 against AJ Styles, The Undertaker has spoken with the world’s media, starred in the acclaimed documentary series The Last Ride and launched a series of one man shows.

Even with so many career highlights to discuss, Vince McMahon will always be the name that gains the most attention.

The Undertaker has been discussing an argument he had with McMahon, that took place during a phone call in which McMahon was sharing news that he was about to step down, retire and leave WWE. Vince did announce his retirement on July 22nd, 2022.

Speaking on Ariel Helwani Meets, The Undertaker explained how he thought it was his former boss “ribbing” and that this led to the pair “going at it a little bit” before news broke the following day that Vince McMahon had retired.

“He called me the day before he announced it and we got in an argument because I thought he was ribbing me. I said, ‘There’s no way. There is absolutely no way you’re stepping away.’ He was like, ‘No, This is what I’m going to do.’ I’m like, ‘Why are you (bleeped out) with me? This is me.’ We ended up going at it a little bit. Finally, I was like, ‘Alright. Okay.’ Sure enough, the next day, Vince resigned, but I knew there’s no way he’d stay away.

Even in this role, I think it’s going to be challenging for him. I mean, that’s his baby, man. He’s the one that created this whole thing. I know he wants to make sure these TV deals and everything are done the right way. Right now, that’s his sole motivation, but that’s Vince McMahon. I don’t know. We’ll see where it goes, but a WWE without Vince is, for me, hard to imagine.”

Vince McMahon made a backstage return this last week, with speculation what this could mean going forward for WWE creative and the role of Triple H.

The Undertaker is keeping up with the action in WWE and is impressed by the work Triple H is doing, praising his former WrestleMania opponent’s success during a time of transition.

“He’s done great. He has always been such a creative force even when he was such a talent. He always had great ideas. It was a perfect position I think for him. I think he’s done a really, really good job, and under really difficult situations too.”

With McMahon making a u-turn and returning to WWE within months of stepping down, ahead of WrestleMania 39, The Undertaker has also discussed what is keeping him from following suit.
