The Undertaker Admits He Didn’t Want To Do Iconic WWE Spot

The Undertaker has made it clear he wanted nothing to do with an iconic WWE moment that will be remembered forever.

At WWE King of the Ring 1998, one of the most infamous matches in WWE history took place. It was a Hell in a Cell match between The Undertaker and Mankind (Mick Foley), which started on top of the cell.

It was the second-ever Hell in a Cell match that began with a brawl on the cell. That brawl led to The Undertaker tossing Mankind off the cell and through the Spanish announce table about 15 feet table below. It is one of the most replayed spots in WWE history. It was also very painful for Mankind.

If Mankind never came back from that then that would have been fine, but Foley is a tough man. They went back up the cage where The Undertaker gave Foley a Chokeslam that broke the cage and sent Foley crashing into the ring. That bump may have been more dangerous than the first. Somehow, Mankind kept on fighting back and somehow the match went 18 minutes when Undertaker finally put Mankind away.

While speaking on Logan Paul’s “Impaulsive” podcast, WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker spoke about the match while admitting that he didn’t want to do the spot off the top of the cell.

“Truth be told, I didn’t want to do it.”

The story has been told many times by Foley he wanted to upstage what Shawn Michaels did during the October 1997 Badd Blood PPV when The Undertaker threw Michaels off the side of the cell through a table.

According to The Undertaker, that’s when Foley got WWE Chairman Vince McMahon involved, which led to Undertaker agreeing to do the spot.

“So, he had in his mind like he needed to do something that would fool the people into thinking that they had seen something, right?”

“They double team me. ‘No, yeah, Mark he says he can do it.’ And I’m like ‘F**k, are you kidding? We don’t need to do it.’ I said, ‘Fine! Alright, you want to get thrown off the top? Fine, I’ll throw you off the top. There. Are you happy?'”

The Undertaker Was Emotional After Tossing Mick Foley Off The Cell

As the discussion continued, Taker spoke about how stressful it was while also thinking he would be remembered for killing Mick Foley.

“‘Cause I let him go, and I can see myself standing there, and I can also see him falling — which seemed like it took 20 seconds — to hit that table, right?”

“I’m like, ‘That’s what I’m going to go down for. I killed Mick Foley.'”

When Foley was able to get back up, The Undertaker was amazed by it.

“And I’m thinking, Wow, okay, that’s over with. That son of a b**ch, he’s like … he starts climbing back up!”

That’s when the second crazy cage spot happened as Undertaker sent Foley through the cell with a Chokeslam.

“We were gonna slide down one of the panels and then get back into the ring and finish the match. And man, when I chokeslammed him? He just never stopped.”

Later in the match, they used thumbtacks for some spots and Taker questioned that as well.

“This is how he thinks, right? ‘We gotta get to the tacks.’ I’m like ‘Mick, I have thrown you off of this thing, I have thrown you through it, I don’t think they care about the tacks.'”

Regarding the legacy of the match, Undertaker spoke about how much it meant to Foley.

“That was his … what would separate him from everybody else, which it did.”
