Ted DiBiase Names What He Hated About WWE NXT Run
Ted DiBiase has always claimed everybody’s got a price, but it appears WWE could not reach his when it comes to scripted promos.
During the summer of 2021, WWE Hall of Famer DiBiase returned to the company and worked on NXT to crown a new Million Dollar Champion.
LA Knight won the Million Dollar Championship after defeating Cameron Grimes in a ladder match at NXT Takeover: In Your House 2021. After DiBiase presented Knight with the Championship, The Megastar attacked DiBiase, forcing Grimes to come in and make the save.
Because of the attack, Knight was made to defend the Championship against Grimes at NXT Takeover 36, but if Grimes lost, DiBiase would have to become Knight’s personal butler.
Grimes was successful and saved Ted DiBiase from that role, but decided to hand the Million Dollar Championship back to DiBiase on the following episode of NXT.
During the feud, Ted DiBiase was asked to perform several scripted promos, which did not sit well with the 1988 King of the Ring. Speaking on the latest episode of Everybody’s Got a Pod, the Three-Time WWE Tag Team Champion admitted how much he disliked being given a script.
“They do these scripted interviews nowadays and I can’t stand it!”
Ted DiBiase was one of the most infamous heels during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s in WWE. The Million Dollar Man had help from Virgil as the pair would insult fans before and after matches.
After retiring, Ted DiBiase worked as an on-screen manager for The Ringmaster, who would soon change his name to “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, before becoming the fourth member of the NWO in August 1996.
With such a lengthy and varied career, Ted DiBiase knows how to work a WWE crowd and explained to NXT staff in 2021 that he needed to make the promos “more real”.
“I said, ‘Look, I’m going to look this over, and I’m going to say what the message is here, but it’s not going to be word-for-word what you’ve written,'”
“It’s gotta be me. The more me it is, the more real it is to the people.”
LA Knight will be looking to his 2021 ladder match experience heading into WWE’s next Premium Live Event. Knight successfully secured his place in the Men’s Money In The Bank Ladder Match and has laid down a warning to all champions across WWE and NXT that he will be winning the Championship contract in London.
Cameron Grimes moved to SmackDown as part of the 2023 WWE Draft and defeated Baron Corbin in his first singles match on the show.
