Roman Reigns Retired During Previous WWE Absence
Roman Reigns considered himself retired during one break from WWE.
Heading into WrestleMania 36, Roman Reigns was scheduled to face Goldberg at the spectacular. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic took hold, Reigns announced he would be stepping away from WWE for health reasons.
Reigns explained that due to being immunocompromised as a result of his previous leukemia diagnosis he was taking a break to keep himself and his family safe.
In Reigns’ absence, WWE continued to produce weekly television and eventually moved into the ThunderDome. Reigns wouldn’t return until SummerSlam, and when he did, he kickstarted a run that has taken his career to a whole new level powered by the longest World Title reign of the modern era.
Speaking to Raj Prashad of Uproxx, Paul Heyman — who has been by Reigns’ side since he returned, claimed the Tribal Chief considered himself retired during his 2020 break. Heyman went on to describe the star’s comeback as a miracle.
“He considered himself retired. He wasn’t coming back,
I was executive director of Monday Night Raw, and Roman was assigned to SmackDown. But every week I heard all the SmackDown writers and producers and personnel saying, ‘God, I just wish Roman would come back.’ And I would ask, has anybody talked to him? Yeah, he says he’s retired. He’s not coming back. No way. Thanks a lot. Done. Finished. Goodbye.
So the fact that he came back for this run, for what we have accomplished, is nothing short of a miracle because as far as he was concerned, he was out.”
