Kevin Owens Wants Championship Match Against Roman Reigns

Kevin Owens has recently discussed why he’s targeting Roman Reigns in his attempt to hold championship gold in WWE.

At Survivor Series WarGames on November 26th, Kevin Owens was part of the Brawling Brutes team that came up just a bit short against The Bloodline group led by Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns. However, there was a moment where it looked like Owens had the match won after hitting a Stunner on Reigns and getting a two count because Sami Zayn stopped the referee’s count.

This wasn’t the first time that Owens has gotten his hands on Reigns since the two men feuded over six years ago when Reigns was the Universal Champion and they also had a memorable rivalry in the early days of Roman’s current title run.

During WWE’s pandemic/Thunderdome Era of shows without fans in attendance for most of 2020 and about half of 2021, Owens challenged Reigns for the Universal Title three times. Reigns beat Owens in a Tables, Ladders & Chairs match at TLC 2020, then in a Steel Cage Match on Smackdown around Christmas, and also in a Last Man Standing Match at Royal Rumble 2021. Owens came close to winning the Universal Title in all of those matches, but Reigns got some help and found a way to escape every time.

While speaking on WWE’s After The Bell podcast, Kevin Owens talked about wanting another chance to face Reigns for the Universal and WWE Titles with Owens saying he was well-equipped to beat Reigns.

“Yeah, you know, I don’t think much has changed honestly, I think I was pretty well-equipped back then too. And it just didn’t work out that way for a multitude of reasons. I just think there’s unfinished business, I think there’s a story, it’s just not done. And I think a lot of people watching would agree and like it’s been two years since all that stuff happened.”

Kevin Owens would go on to talk about how while those matches were really good, they were in front of empty seats due to the pandemic.

“Everything Roman and I put each other through happened in front of empty arenas, you know, during the pandemic. I would love to be able to get that, recapture that and see what happens when it’s in a you know, in front of a sold out arena or sold out stadium, whatever it may be, and get to feel the energy of a crowd watching what’s unfolding in front of them. So I’d love to get to do that one more time with them, just for my own benefit just to be able to hear what we can do with fans you know, in the stands.”

Owens may get his wish because there’s apparently a plan for Owens to challenge Reigns for his two titles at the Royal Rumble in January. There was also a recent incident between Owens and Reigns in the WarGames, but it apparently is okay now with no lingering issues between them.
