John Cena has paid tribute to a man he shared the ring with many times – the late, great Bray Wyatt.

The wrestling world is mourning the death of Bray Wyatt after news came out early Thursday evening that the 36-year-old WWE star passed away due to a heart attack.

It was reported that Wyatt dealt with COVID in the past, his condition had improved and there was optimism that he would be able to return to the WWE ring after we had not seen him since March, but then things turned for the worse on Thursday and he passed away. Wyatt leaves behind a wife named Jojo, who was a WWE ring announcer, and four young children.

Many friends of Wyatt have posted touching tributes to him. John Cena did too. On Twitter/X, Cena wrote the following.

“Devastated by the news of the passing of Windham Rotunda. My heart goes out to the entire Rotunda family. Windham brought the best out of me in so many ways. I’m forever grateful for the moments we shared. A sad day for all those he reached around the world. RIP.”

John Cena and Bray Wyatt Had a Memorable Rivalry In WWE

The first big Cena-Wyatt match was at WrestleMania 30 in 2014. Many fans wanted Wyatt to win since he was a star on the rise and it was the biggest match of his career at that point. Wyatt had the Wyatt Family’s Luke Harper & Erick Rowan with him, yet Cena found a way to overcome and win.

Bray Wyatt did get his big win over Cena at Extreme Rules 2014 in a Steel Cage Match that had a controversial finish, but winning there isn’t as big as winning at WrestleMania. Cena ended up winning the rivalry at Payback 2014 by getting the victory in a Last Man Standing Match.

Cena and Wyatt were in the ring together when Wyatt became WWE Champion for the first time. That was at Elimination Chamber 2017 when they were two of the six men in the match. Cena walked in as the WWE Champion (the last time he was WWE Champion, for what it’s worth) and Wyatt got the biggest victory of his career by becoming WWE Champion that night.

At WrestleMania 36 in 2020, Cena and Wyatt met one more time in the very unique Firefly Fun House Match that was a cinematic match with a lot of interesting visuals and scenes throughout. Wyatt, as The Fiend, got the win to end it and end that rivalry for good.

Following Bray Wyatt’s death, WWE announced that they would donate all net proceeds of Bray Wyatt merchandise to support Bray’s wife JoJo Offerman and Bray’s children.

As for John Cena, he is set to return to WWE on Smackdown next Friday, September 1st.
