How Infamous Edge & Lita Segment Was Born
After Edge captured the WWE Championship for the first time, the resulting “live sex celebration” was one of the most infamous segments to ever air. Now, a former writer has explained how it came to be.
Edge made history at New Year’s Revolution in January 2006 when he became the first wrestler to cash in a Money in the Bank briefcase. In doing so, he defeated John Cena to win his first WWE Championship.
The next night on Raw, the Rated-R Superstar more than lived up to his nickname when he held a “live sex celebration” to with his on-screen girlfriend Lita to mark the occasion in the middle of the ring.
Former WWE writer Chris DeJoseph has now shed some light on where the idea for the segment came from. Speaking to John ‘Bradshaw’ Layfield and Gerald Brisco on Stories with Brisco and Bradshaw, he explained how he came up with the celebration after prompting from Vince McMahon.
“Edge had just won the title from John Cena and cashed in the Money in the Bank. We were in a meeting with Vince and he said, ‘Well what would you do if you won the title and you’re Edge?’ and I said, ‘I would have sex with my girlfriend in the middle of the ring for everybody to see.’ So that’s kind of how that live sex celebration thing happened.”
Edge’s first WWE Championship reign was short-lived as he lost the title back to Cena only weeks later at the 2006 Royal Rumble.
