Gunther’s WWE Character Allegedly “Has Something Missing”

Gunther

Gunther has established himself as one of the most dominant forces in WWE today.

Since becoming World Heavyweight Champion, he has bulldozed through the competition with his intense, hard-hitting style and commanding presence. He’s long been praised for his in-ring skills and discipline, with many touting him as one of the best technical wrestlers in the world. But despite all that success, not everyone is convinced that The Ring General is the total package.

Kenny Bolin Believes Gunther Isn’t Quite “Number One Material”

On the UnSKripted podcast, John Cena’s former manager Kenny Bolin weighed in with an interesting perspective. While Bolin didn’t question Gunther’s ability or accomplishments, he hinted that there might be something intangible holding the champion back from becoming the face of WWE.

“There are some people that think more highly of Gunther than I do, my son is one of them,” Bolin said. “To me there is something missing with Gunther and I can’t exactly put my finger on what it is. And I am not saying I don’t like him. I am just saying that there is something there that doesn’t make him my number one guy in the company.”

From his dominant reign as Intercontinental Champion to now holding the World Heavyweight Title, he has rarely looked vulnerable. Still, Bolin’s remarks echo a sentiment that’s occasionally floated around, that while The Ring General checks nearly every box, he hasn’t yet crossed into the rare space occupied by WWE’s most magnetic, larger-than-life stars.

With WWE constantly evolving and new contenders always emerging, connecting with the audience on multiple levels has never been more important. And for Gunther, this critique could serve as motivation heading into one of the most anticipated matches of his career.

The Ring General is set to defend his championship against none other than Goldberg, who recently returned to WWE and challenged him to what’s being billed as his final match. The match will take place at Saturday Night’s Main Event XL.
