Drew McIntyre Gives Unfiltered Opinion On CM Punk’s Role In WWE
Drew McIntyre thinks he knows what CM Punk’s role is in WWE.
It could be argued that the most personal rivalry in WWE, or any wrestling promotion, this year has been the story involving Drew McIntyre and CM Punk.
This rivalry between two former WWE Champions has taken place over the last seven months even though they’ve only had one official match together. That match saw Drew McIntyre beat CM Punk at WWE SummerSlam in Cleveland due to the controversial refereeing tactics of Seth Rollins.
CM Punk and Drew McIntyre were guests at the Fanatics Fest event in New York City over the weekend. When Punk was asked to say something nice about McIntyre, he had a joke answer about how Drew was the fourth best wrestler to wear a kilt after Roddy Piper and The Highlanders (a 2000s era WWE tag team).
At Fanatics Fest, McIntyre appeared on The Masked Man Show to blast Punk for WWE for a decade while guys like McIntyre kept on going. McIntyre says due to that, he can’t call Punk a professional wrestler. This is how McIntyre replied when asked to say something positive about Punk.
“I can actually do that because I always tell the truth, and I’m not a hypocrite, unlike Punk. His answer was just lazy. ‘He’s the fourth best behind the Highlanders.’ That’s not true, it’s just lazy. One nice thing about Punk; he sells a lot of t-shirts. That’s true. He’s great for merchandising. He’s a big name.”
“The thing that drives me most crazy is that he goes around masquerading, calling himself a professional wrestler. That actually pisses me off to be honest. Invokes names like Harley Race, Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat. Punk took nine years off. He sat on his ass and did nothing while guys like myself and the rest of the WWE roster worked their asses off 52 weeks a year, didn’t take our ball and went home. He quit the company and went and sat on his ass.”
“I got fired. I got told, ‘Hey, you’re not good enough right now. Bugger off.’ My response wasn’t to sit on my couch. I’m going to keep wrestling and work harder than anybody in the world and reinvent myself and come back and reach the top of the WWE mountain and prove I’m the best in the world. That’s what I’ve done. I’m a pro wrestler day in and day out.”
“He went away. He’s been living on the pipe bomb, living on the feud with Cena, he’s smart and maximized and became a big star. Nostalgia is a hell of a thing. He’s been gone for all this time. This legend has been created. He’s no longer a professional wrestler. He’s an attraction.”
“There is nothing wrong with being an attraction, we need attractions, but don’t fucking say you’re a professional wrestler if you’re not a professional wrestler. I’m a professional wrestler.”
CM Punk Expected To Address Drew McIntyre On WWE Raw
It was last week on the August 12th edition of WWE Monday Night Raw when McIntyre and Punk got into a physical exchange again. This time, McIntyre tried to use his belt as a weapon, but Punk got a hold of it and Punk whipped McIntyre with the belt repeatedly. It’s supposed to lead to a Strap Match at the Bash in Berlin PLE on August 31.
As for what’s next, CM Punk is expected to “deliver a message” to Drew McIntyre on Raw from Fort Lauderdale, Florida in front of what should be a very vocal crowd.
