CM Punk Winning The Title A Mistake, Claims Ex-WWE Star
CM Punk became a 7-time World Champion at Saturday Night’s Main Event XLI.
Punk faced Jey Uso in the main event after both men went through qualifying matches at different RAW editions to become title contenders.
A few weeks earlier, Seth Rollins was stripped of the World Heavyweight Championship due to an injury he suffered at Crown Jewel.
Punk vs. Uso started slowly but picked up pace and remained interesting throughout.
Ultimately, it was the 47-year-old who came out on top by hitting Uso with two consecutive GTS. The champion then celebrated with the fans, including singer/rapper Post Malone, who was by the ringside.
CM Punk’s wife, AJ Lee, subsequently shared a message on social media to celebrate his victory.
While many believe it was right to put the title on The Second City Saint, a few believe that he is at a point in his career where he should be paving the way for younger talent.
CM Punk’s Title Win Criticized By Ex-WWE Star
CM Punk recently spoke about being closer to retirement than farther from it.
In wrestling, it is natural for veterans to put over new talents as a show of passing the baton. So, naturally, some felt that Punk beating a younger superstar to win the title was unfair.
Tyrus, who wrestled as Brodus Clay in WWE, had initially said that Punk should have put Uso over.
Echoing his thoughts, former wrestler Maven made a statement during a recent appearance on TMZ’s Inside The Ring.
I agree with what Tyrus said, in a perfect world, he should be like that, but I mean, we’re in a male-dominated industry, wrestling, I say it. Wrestling is high school other than the only difference is everybody in that locker room is the prom king and prom queen.
It’s just you have all these type A personalities. It’s hard to tell these ego-driven maniacs, myself being one of them at a time, that you know what, it’s time for you to play a different role within the company. That’s tough to hear.
And Tyrus is right…..he [Punk] still thinks he’s got, you know, one more run in who are we to say if he does or doesn’t? Usually, father time and injury make that decision for you. [H/T: WrestlingNews.co]
