The John Report: WWE Smackdown 03/17/23 Review

wwe smackdown march 17

This week’s WWE Smackdown featured Drew McIntyre facing Sheamus, Sami Zayn confronting Jey Uso and a whole lot more.

I am doing this review live on Friday. Next Friday I’m going to be at an Impact Wrestling PPV called Sacrifice (plus tapings the next day), so it won’t be live like usual. It’s probably going to be a Saturday morning thing that I’ll write while at a hotel. Anyway, just letting you guys know it won’t be a live Smackdown review next week.

WrestleMania 39 is just over two weeks away. We know most of the lineup at this point, but they still need to add some things and finalize a few matches as well. If you are going to WrestleMania this year, I hope you enjoy it. There’s a lot to do that whole weekend, so try to have some fun. I’m passing on it this year, but I should be at SummerSlam in Detroit this August.

From the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri, this is Smackdown for episode #1230. Follow me on Twitter @johnreport. Let’s get to it.

The announcers Michael Cole and Wade Barrett welcomed us to the show while promoting what’s coming up this week.

Let’s Hear from Cody Rhodes

The suit wearing man Cody Rhodes is a Raw guy, but here’s on Smackdown as we continue on the road to WrestleMania. Cody challenges Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion at WrestleMania 39. Big pop for Cody with the fans shouting for the “Whoa-oh” part of the song.

Cody: “So Kansas City, what do you want to talk about?” Cody said we could talk about WrestleMania. Cody said that tempers are what they are and stakes are high, but he does want to point out that he has the utmost respect for the current Roman Reigns. Cody said that Roman is the greatest champion in sports, he looks forward to seeing Roman on Raw and he looks forward to beating Roman at WrestleMania. Loud “Cody” chants for that.

Cody said he wants to talk “to” somebody. Cody said he knows he is back there, he knows he is watching so please Kevin Owens, come on out.

Kevin Owens made his entrance to join Cody in the ring as we saw a highlight from Raw with The Usos helping their brother Solo Sikoa beat Owens. There were “KO” chants before Owens spoke.

Owens said he’s pretty sure he knows what this is about and we’ve been over this. Cody said this isn’t a conversation between two people, so Cody called out Sami Zayn.

Sami Zayn got a big ovation from the crowd along with the fans singing along with the catchy song. Owens stood in the corner away from Zayn while the fans were chanting for Sami.

Cody was standing between the two men. Cody talked about how he has an incredible amount of respect and love for Kevin Owens. Cody said six or seven years ago when he was bold enough to say to WWE “good luck in your future endeavors” and he had Owens introduce him to some friends to better Cody’s livelihood. Cody said it’s a favor he can never repay, but he would like to repay it in this moment. Cody thinks they should have the conversation. The fans were chanting “hug it out.”

Owens said that he heard what Zayn has had to say. Zayn said he hasn’t heard what Owens has had to say. Zayn talked about how they have turned on eachother, hurt eachother and found a way to get on the same page. Zayn can’t understand why this time is so different. Zayn told Owens to scream at him or punch him in the face if that’s what Owens needs to do.

Owens said he came here like Cody asked and he listened to Zayn, so did Cody get what he wanted? Cody said that they are in the service industry, the people pleasing business and it doesn’t matter what he wants. Cody said it’s what he wants, Cole wants, what the fans want and every one of these people want to see Owens and Zayn back on the same page. There was a “hug it out” chants.

Zayn said that the fans want it, Zayn wants it and if they can come together they can do something magical. Zayn said: “We can be the ones that bring down The Ones.” Zayn said we didn’t even need to do this as friends, we just need to do this together. Owens said he has heard Zayn say it for weeks. Owens said they can all take down The Bloodline together and they don’t have to be friends to do it. Owens asked why would he fight for somebody that wants to be his friend. Owens thanked Cody, handed him the microphone, said he’s all set and Owens left. The fans were sad about it.

Analysis: A good segment with Cody Rhodes as the babyface mediator of this Sami Zayn-Kevin Owens story to try to get them on the same page. Everybody wants it, but Owens isn’t sure yet because he seems to be upset that Zayn thinks they can do this without being friends again. We know that it’s probably leading to Owens-Zayn reuniting to go against The Usos at WrestleMania, but it’s not happening yet. I thought it was well done as a tease for whenever this reunion between Sami and Kevin is going to happen. The crowd reactions to it were strong. Notice how they listen and don’t chant “what?” during the promos? It’s because it is riveting television.

Sami Zayn is on again to have a chat with Jey Uso later.

Dominik Mysterio and Rhea Ripley were shown walking backstage for a mixed tag team match up next.

A WWE 2K23 commercial aired featuring a lot of WWE superstars. That was pretty cool. The game is out there now.

(Commercial)

Kevin Owens was shown trying to leave in the car. Sami Zayn walked up to him saying they will always be friends, but they aren’t just friends, they are brothers. Zayn said if you never want to talk again, that’s fine, but Zayn wants to let him know that he loves Owens. Owens drove off while Zayn watched him leave.

Analysis: They are close like brothers, so maybe what Sami just said is what will make Owens feel like he can trust Sami again.

Rhea Ripley & Dominik Mysterio vs. Santos Escobar & Zelina Vega

Cole was trashing Dominik while Barrett said that Dominik has been better since hanging out with Rhea, which is a good point. It’s men vs. men and women vs. women in this match. Dominik tried attacking with a forearm, but Escobar came back with his own forearm and punches. Vega tagged in with a senton on a standing Ripley on the floor. Vega with a headscissors spiking Ripley on the mat. Escobar dove onto Dominik on the floor. Vega was on the middle turnbuckle and hit a moonsault onto a standing Ripley on the floor. That looked great leading to a break.

(Commercial)

Dominik was in control for a bit, but Escobar hit him with a perfect dropkick and a leg drop for two was Ripley broke up the pin. Ripley slammed Dominik onto Escobar for a two count with Vega breaking up the pin attempt. Vega and Dominik ran the ropes leading to a collision spot. Ripley tagged in against Vega, who hit a running kick and an impressive DDT. Ripley sold that really well. Vega tried a rollup, but Dominik broke it up. Ripley tossed Vega out of the ring. Escobar went for a superplex, but Ripley was there to Powerbomb Escobar at the same time. Vega jumped off the middle rope with a cross body block on Ripley. Vega with a knee to Ripley. Vega with a hurricanrana on Dominik, which allowed Ripley to recover and Ripley hit a Riptide Slam on Vega for the pinfall win after about eight minutes.

Winners by pinfall: Rhea Ripley & Dominik Mysterio

Analysis: *** That was a fun tag team match that was very fast-paced with a lot of action. Ripley sold for most of the match with Vega, who looked impressive and then Ripley hit one power move to win. Vega has been a heel for so long, but she certainly fit in well as a face here since she’s a smaller wrestler that is able to hit some athletic moves. Dominik and Escobar worked well together. No surprise that Ripley won since she’s going for the Smackdown Women’s Title at WrestleMania, so of course she’s going to look strong here.

Post match, Dominik Mysterio talked about how his dad Rey Mysterio is a Hall of Famer that is a deadbeat of a father. Dominik spoke about how he had all those sleepless nights. They showed Rey Mysterio walking backstage, so they went to break teasing a Rey-Dominik showdown.

Analysis: That’s a unique way to interrupt a promo, go to a break and have the rest of the promo after a break. It works.

(Commercial)

They were promoting the Sami Zayn-Jey Uso segment as a “Showdown In Kansas City” later in the show.

Let’s Hear from Dominik and Rey Mysterio

Rey Mysterio made his way down to the ring. Rey looked serious on his way to the ring and he was announced as a WWE Hall of Famer. Rey went into the ring. Dominik said that he went a lot of nights without a father. Rey asked Rhea if he can have a moment with his son alone, so she backed away.

Dominik said that now they were in the ring, Rey has time for him? Dominik said that Rey took away Dominik’s WrestleMania moment because Rey is a sad, pathetic excuse of a father. Dominik was about to call him a “piece of sh–” but Rey left. Rey said that he did miss birthdays, Christmas, graduations, football games, but that doesn’t take away the love he has for his son and he still loves Dominik. Rey said that Dominik is his world. Rey said that pretty soon Dominik will find out this business is selfish, so Rey made sacrifices to give Rey’s wife, son and daughter the life they wanted. Rey said that whenever Dominik got in trouble, the Mysterio name would bail him out.

Rey said that he is having a hard time coping with all this. Rey said he’s being inducted into the Hall of Fame (the fans cheer). Rey said he would love nothing more than to have Dominik standing by his side on that stage. Dominik shook his head “no” while the fans chanted “you deserve it” for Rey. Rey said maybe it’s too late for that.

Rey said that his biggest regret is what Dominik has become. Rey said that if somebody that was ungrateful, disgraceful, pathetic, punk ass kid called him out at WrestleMania then Rey would gladly whoop his ass. The fans cheered and cheered “kick his ass” for that. Rey said unfortunately, Dominik is his son and fighting Dominik would be the biggest disgrace as a father. Rey told Dominik that he is not worth it. Rey said he won’t fight Dominik now or ever and he won’t fight him at WrestleMania either. Rey left the ring.

Dominik trashed Rey for running away from his own son again. Dominik said that Rey was a scared little man. Rey paused near the entrance area, but then they cut away and that was it.

Analysis: I thought that Rey promo was outstanding. The fans were so ready when it sounded like Rey was going to accept Dominik’s challenge for WrestleMania but then Rey said no, he can’t fight his son. The fans are going to pop huge when Rey finally hits Dom. This was very well done.

They showed Drew McIntyre and Sheamus getting ready in other parts of the building. Sheamus had his Brawling Brutes buddies with him.

The announcers were shown with Wade Barrett saying there will be Men’s and Women’s Fatal 4-Way matches at WrestleMania. We had a report on that on TJRWrestling earlier in the day.

(Commercial)

The winners get to be in the Women’s Fatal 4-Way Tag Team Match at WrestleMania.

Raquel Rodriguez & Liv Morgan vs. Tegan Nox & Emma

Raquel used her power against Nox early and then Morgan tagged in with a running kick to the head. Nox with a forearm followed by a knee. Emma tagged in with a running cross body block on Morgan in the corner. Emma hit a suplex. Nox tagged in with a front suplex. Morgan hit double knees on Nox to break free. Raquel got the tag against Emma with a lefty clothesline followed by a fallaway slam. Raquel with a spinning elbow off the ropes for two because Nox broke up the pin. Morgan with double knees on Nox, but Emma tossed Morgan out of the ring. Raquel countered an Emma move and hit a Texana Bomb. Morgan tagged in for the Oblivion flatliner off the ropes for the pinfall win after three minutes.

Winners by pinfall: Raquel Rodriguez & Liv Morgan

Analysis: *3/4 Easy win for Raquel and Liv, who are pushed a lot more than their opponents. The Texana Bomb/Oblivion combo was done well as a tandem move. I like Emma and Tegan as performers, but it’s hard to really break out on the roster right now.

The win means that Raquel & Liv are in the Women’s Fatal 4-Way Tag Team Match at WrestleMania.

They showed a clip for last week’s Smackdown when Charlotte Flair told Rhea Ripley that while Rhea will rip apart any woman, she can’t do it to Flair.

Charlotte Flair made her entrance as the Smackdown Women’s Title with a full body suit outfit.

(Commercial)

Let’s Hear from Charlotte Flair

Charlotte said when she was a baby in her mom’s arms, this business was built on Flair as a champion and Rhodes as a challenger. Charlotte said that’s what we are doing at this year’s WrestleMania. Charlotte said that this is her seventh WrestleMania while adding she’s either been the champion or the challenger, but always the star. Charlotte talked about how Ripley wants to be the star and the champion, but she can’t be the champion unless she goes through Flair. Charlotte said that Ripley couldn’t go through her three years ago and she can’t go through her now. Charlotte said the more things change, the more they stay the same. That ties in to what she said at the start.

Rhea Ripley and Dominik Mysterio made their way back out there as they got into the ring with Flair. Ripley told Charlotte she chose her instead of Bianca Belair, but she will get back to that. Ripley said that everyone fears her except for Charlotte. Ripley said that Charlotte is staring her down without an ounce of fear in her eyes and that pisses Ripley off. Ripley said that Charlotte is the champion for a reason – a 14-time Women’s Champion for a reason. Ripley said that Flair is a superstar, one of the biggest stars in WWE and Ripley can give her all the credit in the world, but that Smackdown Women’s Championship is something Ripley wants it. Ripley said she needs it. Ripley said she needs to be a star. Ripley said after WrestleMania, Flair will learn to call her champion and she will learn to fear Ripley.

Dominik towards Charlotte saying “Mami is going to beat you at WrestleMania.” Flair raised her hand to Dominik, so Ripley punched Flair in the face.

Charlotte Flair got back up and clotheslined Ripley on the floor. The women exchanged punches as they fought on the floor. There were officials that ran out there to try to break it up. Ripley sent Charlotte into the ring post. Charlotte came back with a tackle on the floor. Charlotte hit a running boot to the face of a security guard because Ripley moved. Ripley sent Charlotte over the commentary table. Charlotte came back by jumping off the table to tackle Ripley on the floor. The women were separated by security again, but it didn’t work because Ripley broke free leading to a tackle over the barricade. Ripley was into the crowd while Flair was at ringside. Flair signaled to Ripley to bring it. Flair held her title up in the air while Ripley was looking up at her. That was it.

Analysis: This was great! That was a very effective segment to up the intensity of that story. I mentioned in past weeks that they needed to have Flair-Ripley fight eachother, so they did it the right way here. Ripley’s explanation about how Flair isn’t intimidated by Ripley is a good way of explaining why Rhea picked Flair for WrestleMania. It makes sense for Rhea’s character. I liked the brawl a lot. They fought all around the ringside area, they didn’t let up and it looked legit.

Sami Zayn was interviewed by Kayla Braxton talking about how Kevin Owens took off while Jey Uso was like a brother, but he knows Jey wants to take him out. Zayn said if Jey wants to meet him in the ring then that’s fine. Zayn said if he has to handle this by himself then he’ll handle it by himself and he’s ready for it.

Xavier Woods made his entrance for a match against LA Knight. No Kofi Kingston since he had ankle surgery. Best wishes to Kofi coming back.

(Commercial)

They showed a brief clip of the WWE 2K23 launch party on Thursday on 3:16 day so Steve Austin was there as well. Lots of WWE superstars were there too.

Xavier Woods vs. LA Knight

They showed a video from the locker room with LA Knight and Woods arguing while Woods was playing video games with Madcap Moss. Cole mentioned Kofi’s ankle surgery earlier on Friday. Knight got some offense going with a punch along with a DDT. Woods did some punches followed by a missile dropkick off the middle ropes. Woods with a sitout suplex for two. Knight shoved Woods into the turnbuckle followed by a neckbreaker. Knight picked up Woods leading to a slam sending Woods hard into the mat for a two count. Woods managed to get an inside cradle for the pinfall win after three minutes.

Winner by pinfall: Xavier Woods

Analysis: ** I thought this would be a match that Knight could actually win, but it didn’t happen. I’m not sure what they have planned for Knight at WrestleMania or if there is anything at all. Maybe Knight will just get a promo segment, Steve Austin comes out and hits him with some Stunners. I don’t know at this point.

The announcers talked about The Great Muta being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame this year. They showed some images and clips, but not a lengthy video package.

Analysis: Based on his career in wrestling, The Great Muta is absolutely deserving. Muta didn’t wrestle in WWE, but he was in NWA/WCW and an innovator during his legendary career in Japan. I’m certainly fine with it. Muta retired as a wrestler earlier this year, so the time was right for this.

Drew McIntyre facing Sheamus was up next.

(Commercial)

LA Knight was about to be interviewed by Kayla Braxton, but then Knight went over to Rey Mysterio signing things. Knight said he’ll fight Dominik if Rey doesn’t and called Rey a deadbeat dad, so Rey punched Knight. Rey spoke in Spanish leading to Knight asking what did he just say? That was it.

Analysis: That should set up a Rey-Knight match.

A Progressive Match Flo replay was shown of last week’s Smackdown with Drew McIntyre and Sheamus each getting pinfall wins because they had two referees for the Fatal 5-Way match. That led to WWE deciding on this singles match.

Sheamus was up first on this St. Patrick’s Day, so it could be good luck for the Irishman. Sheamus had a shillelagh with him Drew McIntyre was up next with Angela the sword in his hands. They both pointed at the giant WrestleMania sign. The Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER made his entrance with the Imperium guys by his side. They went to break.

(Commercial)

Drew McIntyre vs. Sheamus

The bell rang when they came back from break. The winner will get to challenge GUNTHER for the Intercontinental Title at WrestleMania 39.

They are best friends and have been close for about 20 years. Drew hit a running knee to the ribs of Sheamus and Drew hit a suplex. Sheamus knocked Drew down with a clothesline as Gunther put a on headset. Gunther said he’ll beat whoever wins this match. Drew hit an elbow to the head, Drew kicked Sheamus into the ropes and Drew hit a Michinoku Driver for two. Gunther wasn’t impressed by the questions. Drew with chops, Sheamus with forearms and Sheamus hit a backbreaker for two. Sheamus went for the forearms on the apron, Drew countered that and Drew went for forearms, but Sheamus blocked those. Drew ran right into double boots from Sheamus. Sheamus went up top, Drew stopped him with a punch and Drew gave Sheamus a superplex off the top leading to a commercial.

(Commercial)

Sheamus was in full control with the ten forearms to the chest while the WrestleMania sign was in the background. Sheamus went for a Brogue Kick, Drew avoided it and Drew hit a neckbreaker. Drew charged and Sheamus hit a running knee for two. The fans chanted “this is awesome” as both guys were down selling. Drew and Sheamus exchanged punches, then clotheslines, and Drew hit a headbutt. Sheamus with a knee that sent Drew into the middle turnbuckle. Sheamus went for a Brogue Kick while Drew hit a Claymore Kick and both guys were down on the mat. The referee was counting them both down, then Gunther went on the apron and into the ring. Gunther shouted at the referee, who stopped counting. Gunther shouted at both men wondering who is it going to be? Kaiser and Vinci hit Sheamus & Drew at the same time, so there was no winner. It went 11 minutes.

Match Result: No Contest

Analysis: ***1/4 A very good match as usual between Sheamus and Drew. I can’t say I’m surprised by the non-finish ending to the match. They had a very even matchup the whole way with each guy hitting some signature moves before the double finisher spot. Having Gunther interfere was what I thought would happen.

Gunther hit a running dropkick on Drew and a clothesline on Sheamus. Gunther gave Sheamus a Powerbomb onto Drew’s back. The fans were booing this.

Adam Pearce, the WWE Official, appeared on the video screen. Pearce said that Gunther said he wanted a single opponent, but clearly, he didn’t mean it. Pearce said he is making it official saying that Gunther will defend the Intercontinental Championship against Drew McIntyre in a triple threat match at WrestleMania 39.

Analysis: I know the Gunther vs. Drew vs. Sheamus match at WrestleMania has been rumored for a while. Just took a bit of time get there. It should be an outstanding match. Three talented European dudes that aren’t afraid to hit hard. It should be one of the best WM matches this year.

Jey Uso was shown walking backstage with his two Tag Team Titles for the main event promo up next.

(Commercial)

They announced Rey Mysterio facing LA Knight next week on Smackdown.

Sami Zayn and Jey Uso Have a Confrontation

Jey Uso was in the ring alone without an entrance. Sami Zayn made his entrance quickly by walking to the ring. Sami told Jey let’s do this. Jey said he didn’t like Sami from the beginning while Jimmy, Solo, Heyman and Roman all liked him. Jey talked about how he always keeps his guard up because he always protects the family. Jey added that he finally let his guard down for Sami and then Sami ended up going against the family. Jey said that Sami betrayed the family. Jey spoke about how he has always known that Sami has been a “fake ass Uce.” Jey said he has no choice. Sami said that Jey really does have a choice. Sami said that Jey is mad at himself. Sami said that Jey isn’t mad that Sami hit Roman with the steel chair (at Royal Rumble), Jey is just mad that he (Jey) didn’t get to hit Roman with the chair first.

Jey went after Sami with punches. Sami fought back with punches and tackled Jey. Jimmy Uso was there to jump Sami in the ring. Jey was back up and hit Sami with a superkick. The Usos brought Sami out of the ring with Jey hitting Sami in the face with the steel steps. They went back into the ring.

Kevin Owens! It’s the music of Kevin Owens as KO entered the ring from behind The Usos. Owens clotheslined Jey and clotheslined Jimmy over the top to the floor. Jey was back in, so Owens threw him out of the ring. Owens stomped and punched Jey. Jimmy was back in so Owens hit him with a Stunner. Owens with a Popup Powerbomb on Jey! Both Usos left the ring.

Sami Zayn slowly got back to his feet as he stood across the ring from Kevin Owens. The fans were chanting “hug it out!” Owens walked over to Zayn and gave him a huge hug in the ring. The fans were cheering huge for it! Cody Rhodes was shown watching on a TV backstage with a big smile on his face. Owens stood side by side with Zayn while The Usos were in the aisle. Cole was talking about the friendship and all this other stuff that they probably wrote out for him earlier in the day. Cole shouted that KO and Sami are back while Sami had a big smile on his face. That was the end of the show.

Analysis: Great ending! Finally, it’s the KO and Sami reunion that we all wanted to see for several weeks now. I think it’s an example of how it’s important to not rush a story like this. The creative team has done a nice job of taking their time, letting the story play out since the Royal Rumble when Sami became a face. If Owens just accepted Sami as his friend again then that wouldn’t be that interesting. By waiting nearly two months for Owens to finally hug Sami again, you’re making it matter more and making that hug mean a lot. That’s why the fans reacted to it in such an emotional way. If you rush it, then what would they have done for the past two months? The build to this moment was fantastic. This is the best WWE storyline in years. I also think what Sami said to Jey about how Jey isn’t mad at Sami, he’s mad at himself is brilliant storytelling too. This should lead to Sami & KO beating The Usos for the Tag Team Titles at WrestleMania (maybe both sets of Tag Team Titles), but after that, there’s the story with Jey and Roman Reigns as well that should be compelling in the months ahead.

Just listen to this pop for that hug. That was huge.

Stories matter so much. Invest in them long term. Good matches happen every week multiple times on every wrestling show because there’s so much talent. But when you tell the right stories, that’s how you make bigger stars and get fans to tune in and watch more. This story is making bigger stars out of Sami, Kevin, Cody, The Usos, Solo and everybody else. Roman is already there and he’s bringing these guys up with him, which is wonderful to see. There’s so much more to the Roman-Jey story as well and that’s something we can see after WrestleMania most likely. All of them are part of a team and they are working so well together.

Three Stars of the Show

  1. Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens – That hug!
  2. Drew McIntyre/Sheamus
  3. Rhea Ripley/Charlotte Flair/Rey Mysterio

The Scoreboard

8 out of 10

Last week: 7.25

2023 Average: 7.11

Final Thoughts

That felt like a great Smackdown, especially in terms of storyline advancement for the WrestleMania matches. It wasn’t the best show in terms of matches, but really so what? They have the biggest show of the year coming in two weeks and this Smackdown did an excellent job of building to it. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn finally are on the same page after nearly two months with KO saving Sami from an attack by The Usos. It’s all because Sami told Kevin he loved him as a brother. That tag team match at WrestleMania (not official yet) is going to be amazing.

I also really liked the Charlotte Flair-Rhea Ripley segment. Ripley said she chose Charlotte because Charlotte doesn’t fear her, so Ripley will make Flair fear her. After Ripley got in a cheap slap, Charlotte went after Rhea for a big brawl around the ring. This feud needed it. They were going at it and it was believable. Rey Mysterio’s promo toward Dominik was terrific as well. Rey still doesn’t want to fight his son, but what he said and how he said it got the crowd behind him even more.

The Drew McIntyre-Sheamus had a non-finish when Gunther and friends attacked them. The match was fun before that. That cheap attack by Gunther and friends set up the obvious IC Title triple threat match at WrestleMania 39. That’s another match that will be outstanding at WM. The WM39 card is pretty damn solid from top to bottom, I think.

Here’s the WrestleMania 39 lineup so far taking place on April 1st and April 2nd:
