WWE Title Win For 39-Year-Old Star Was A Reward, Not Strategy

Triple H WWE Royal Rumble

WWE Championship victories aren’t always the easiest to decide for the creative team. While several superstars deserve a chance at the gold, the decision boils down to who can draw the biggest crowd reaction.

Over the years, the Stamford-based promotion has made decisions that haven’t always settled well with the superstars or the fandom, but eventually the fans always got what they wanted!

The way decisions are made has changed with the change in creative heads. Vince McMahon and Triple H lead the creative team very differently, with many claiming they have witnessed an improved backstage environment under The Cerebral Assassin.

Former superstar reveals why Vince McMahon rewarded him with a WWE Championship run

Recently, former superstar Jinder Mahal appeared for an interview with Inside The Ropes. During that conversation, his only championship run in 2017 was brought up.

He revealed that Vince McMahon booked him to defeat Randy Orton in 2017 at Backlash because of his transformation. The Big Man’s decision wasn’t based on strategy but to reward Mahal for his hard work. Furthermore, he revealed that the company did not make any profit during the India tour when Jinder Mahal was champion, essentially clarifying that it wasn’t a strategic move for regional gain.

I became WWE Champion because of the transformation that I had. Vince saw the hard work that I put in, and he wanted to reward me. If I didn’t do that transformation, if I would have looked the same way I was in 3MB, I would never have been WWE Champion. I promise you guys that.

WWE made zero money from any wrestling tour WWE did of India. During that time, I was WWE Champion.

Jinder Mahal was released in April 2024.
